What Does My Community Mean To Me

I don’t live in a wealthy neighborhood. It is full of vacant rental homes with overgrown yards. People move in down the street and move out a few months later. There has never been kids my age, they are always too young or too old to be friends with. The one friend I had moved to Georgia 3 years ago. A theme I found in the novel is to not judge people, my community has helped me learn this. When there were kids my age, they were always boys. My brother would befriend them and sometimes they would let me tag along when they would hang out together. We would ride bikes, play computer games, watch TV and explore the creek and woods near our houses. We always got along, but I knew that if I acted too much “like a girl” they would tell me to go home. Scout experiences this too. When she acted “like a girl” Jem and Dill would make fun of her.
Watching everybody around me move while I stayed helped me know how lucky I am and be thankful for the things I have. I was never around other kids that much when I was younger so it has always been hard for me to make friends at school. Where I live has helped me realize that I am lucky, but it has also helped me see how lucky other people are which has taught me that there is always something to be grateful for. The people that live around me are very diverse. There are people of all different classes, races, sexualities, religions and ages. The diverse community has taught me tolerance because I’ve had to deal with so many types of people. Because of this, I rarely stereotype people, but sometimes I relate people what I experienced in my community. Even though I’m not always accepting of people, I think that my community has made me a lot more open minded than I would have been if I lived somewhere
