The United States Military has always been an influential and important part of my life growing up as child. My grandfather was a Marine who fought in the battle of Okinawa during World War II and he has always instilled a deep sense of pride and respect for my country in me. As a child, I dreamt that one day I would have the honor and the opportunity of becoming a member of the United States military and make him proud. Today, I serve in the United States Army as a Non-Commissioned Officer and I have had the pleasure of leading and mentoring junior enlisted soldiers, as well as my peers, for the past ten years. I believe my experience, professionalism, and leadership will be helpful in serving my country as a United States Army Officer.…

Objective: From 2001 to 2006, the Army deployed over 717,000 personnel to Iraq and Afghanistan, with over 15,000 troops wounded. Little is known about the impact of military and demographic factors, particularly deployment, occupation, and pre-existing medical status, on disability retirement. Methods: A nested case-control study of first time, active duty personnel entering from 1997 to 2004. Cases, individuals granted a medical disability retirement from 1997 to 2006, were identified by the Army Physical Disability Agency. Five controls were matched by year of entrance to each case. Results: Several factors were associated with increased risk of disability retirement, including sex, age, Hispanic ethnicity, body mass index, and military occupation; deployment was associated with a lower risk. Conclusions: The reasons for increased risk among some groups are unknown. The decreased risk associated with deployment probably reflects a "healthy warrior effect," whereas the increased risk for combat arms may reflect combat exposures among the deployed and more rigorous training among the nondeployed.[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] . Since I was a little kid she had been a constant in my life. Every holiday, every family reunion, every birthday, she would always be present. At family reunions, she would be engaged in conversation at the daily breakfasts and dinners, at every birthday party she would be there when the presents were opened and the cake was eaten. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, she would always bring her famous deviled eggs and would be playing with the children. Near the end she would almost always be asleep and covered in blankets on the couch, until her family needed her. But perhaps the strongest memory I have of her was only between us. Our family was visiting Stillwater for the day, for what reason I can’t remember. Being young at the time I was always excited to have a ride in my grandparents’ van, especially if she was there. We were sitting in the very back, and she was talking to me about something which I only now see the profoundness of: her own mortality. She told me she wanted to live to see me graduate high school, a dream which she wouldn’t live to see to fruition. In telling me this I realize now that she was confiding in me her fear of death, a fear which at the time I had no concept…

He would to tell me stories about some of the training missions that he went on, about how he and his unit would play war games with the Navy seals. He would tell me stories about some of the actual missions he was on, some of the places he had been, and some of the things that he had seen. The one thing that he never told me was how the military changed his life. Little did I know that beginning on September 16, 2002 my life would begin to change forever.…
