What Does It Mean To Be An Adult
It is generally said that someone over 20 in age is an adult. To an extent, this explanation may be true, but what does it truly mean to be an adult? There are many contents that make a person an adult. One of the biggest factors of an adult is being self-advocate. When adolescents become adults, they have to make their own choices and know how to make the right decision. In the early parts of life, adolescents do not need to think about taking full responsibility because they have parents or guardians that look after and protect them. In those stages, people are not mature enough to think deeply about the consequences they will get if they make the wrong choices. An example can be teenagers getting drunk at parties. In my own opinion, those teens who the world calls our “Young adults” is crap. Why would they be young adults and yet have nothing they can do except make mistakes like everyone does in their teen years. Of course not every single adolescent is mature enough to make a reasonable decision that may affect their life, and we can argue that not every adult is mature enough or has the capacity to make their own decision. Morris Kent was 16 years old when police arrested and charged him for multiple counts of burglary, robbery, and rape. The teen was already on probation in Washington D.C. for prior burglaries and theft. The prosecutor on the case wanted Kent's trial to happen in adult court. His reasons included Kent's criminal history and the serious nature of the current charges. Kent's lawyer, of course, wanted the case to stay in juvenile court. Had the judge allowed a hearing, Kent's lawyer would have argued that his client was mentally ill. He would have said this fact should be considered before determining which trial court to use. Yet the judge made the decision without holding a hearing. The adult court tried Kent and found him guilty of the charges. His sentence was 30 to 90 years in prison. In his appeal, Kent argued that the case should have stayed in juvenile court.…

When do people stop being children? The legal answer is eighteen. In the eyes of society you’re seen as adults. That doesn't necessarily mean you take on adulthood right away. Of course you’re allowed to vote and have other rights adults enjoy, but you most likely still depend on your parents like a child would. An example is; let’s say you still live with your parents and your mom still does your laundry and basically all the other things she did when you were a child. You are an adult in the physical and legal sense but are not mentally because you are not handling responsibilities an adult would. Therefore, your parents…

Going to school should be about learning and developing skills needed in life, but grade school kids today take going to school as a chance to show off the latest trends at the expense of the less fortunate that are not able to keep up with those trends. History has shown how far kids go with that, a young girl only ten years old took her own life because of constant torment about her clothes and shoes. Children naturally are honest about certain things and that honesty can sometimes become cruelty to other students, and taking away the fuel from the fire can be a good start. School uniforms should be required in American Public Schools because their use would lead to uniformity in kids, less chances of being a victim of bulling, and a lower cost to parents.…

A few days back, I saw a controversial music video from an artist, who was once known for her wholesome image. In the video her clothes were very vulgar, and their choreography was provocative. Her song involved references to partying, alcohol, and drugs. As I scrolled down to read the comments, I came upon one that said: “Get lost! Give her a break, she grew up”. This statement I found a mockery to the concept of “being a grown up”. Growing up is not about learning to curse, getting drunk, or getting high, when you are not a minor any more. It isn’t disobeying and rebelling against everything that your parents once instilled in you simply because when you’re eighteen and above, you supposedly can. It doesn’t even mean knowing everything about anything. Growing up, is learning to see life more clearly and being more mature in handling it. It is being in control of life, and knowing which direction to take. It is being at peace with who you are as a person and learning to establish within you the right set of values. It doesn’t stop there for it also includes, being responsible enough to stand by your principles at any given circumstance. It is letting go of pride by accepting mistakes when you are wrong, and being open to other people’s opinions. It is learning to love and serve your fellows selflessly. It is having the courage to always be the better person when in the middle of an argument. It is most of all, having earned wisdom, and knowing its difference from mere knowledge. The grown ups are not necessarily the ones in office suits walking around in Wall Street. The grown ups may be anyone from the elderly people to the youngest of kids. Why? This is because maturity is not in our age; the number of years, wrinkles, and white hair strands, rather it is in our being. As the adage goes “Age is the acceptance of a term of years. But maturity is the glory of years. (Graham, M.)”…

People never seem to quite understand the meaning of being an “adult”. I myself am not very sure of the full meaning of it. It has always seemed to me that age is irrelevant. You can be 12 and understand things better than a 30-year-old or you can be 40, have two PhD’s and still wonder if pigeons are migratory birds. Many people my age think that getting out of their parents’ house is an act of maturity but how does changing your situation prove that you are an “adult”? If they run away from home it is more likely to lose themselves trying to cope alone and underprepared with the difficulties in life. To become an adult you must achieve a separate identity. Still everyone perceives the world and every thought in it through their own consciousness.…

Think about the months leading up to your 18th birthday. Do you remember being excited to finally be an adult? What were you most excited for: getting to vote? Not having a curfew? How about the ability to enter into a legal contract? It's likely that contracts aren't on the minds of most soon-to-be 18-year-olds, but the age of 18 actually makes a difference.…
