What Does It Mean to "Be Healthy"?
What Does It Mean to "Be Healthy"? If you were to take a picture of your current state of health, how would it look? How are you feeling? Are you well rested? Are you ready to take on whatever challenges the day holds in store for you? Is your outlook positive? Do you get along with family members, teachers, and peers? What about yesterday? Did you eat well and get plenty of sleep? Your answers to these questions provide a picture of your general level of health. If this surprises you, the reason may be that, like many people, you think health is the abstinence of sickness. Health, however, is so much more than that. Health is the combination of your physical, mental and emotional, and social wellbeing. Your health affects everything about you, including how you look, how you feel, and even how you act. It affects your attitudes and performances in school, work, and recreation. It affects how you feel about yourself, how successful you are in your relationships, and helps to determine some of your goals and aspirations. Be aware that health is not an absolute state, being healthy doesn't mean that you will never be sick. Instead, being healthy means striving to be the best you can be at any given time. Physical health is the way the parts and systems of your body work together. It means your body has the ability to cope with the stresses of normal daily life. It means having the strength and energy to pursue physical, mental, emotional and social challenges and changes. To gain or maintain physical health, you need to have proper nutrition, regular physical activity, and enough rest and sleep. You need to practice good hygiene to prevent disease, and get regular medical and dental checkups and treatments when you need them. Good physical health also includes paying attention to what you put into your body. It means resisting tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. Mental and emotional health includes your feelings about yourself, how well you relate to

One of the sides from the triangle is physical health. Physical health is the overall care of your body and how your body feels both inside and out. Ways to improve your physical health include exercising to keep your body fit and the cleanliness of your body. Eating a well balanced diet also improves your physical health because that's how you get the vitamins, minerals and the nutrition your body needs to function and grow. Some of the things that I do are that I try to eat more fruits and vegetables instead of junk food and drink plenty of water. I also go play sports with family and friends for fun and to get some exercise. These things are important because eating more healthy choices lowers the risk of getting diabetes and heart diseases. Most people will think of physical wellness as how they are feeling, whether they are sick, tired, or injured in some sort of way. According to Harper, he defines physical wellness as the ability to perform daily activities in a safe, capable, and efficient manner, as well as the physical capacity to respond effectively in unusual situations (2008). Harper further mentions that there are five components of physical wellness, such as cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance, body composition, and flexibility. If a person does not have physical wellness then they are at an increased risk of a lifestyle disease such as hypokinetic disease, diabetes, and obesity. Qualities of a person that inhibits physical wellness, as discussed by the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research are controlling your weight, combating health conditions and diseases, improves your mood, boosts your energy, sleep better, put the spark back into your love life, and physical fitness can be fun (2011). Furthermore the general goal is to aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day in order to attain the above qualities (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 2011). One way of getting started into a goal of being physically well is to check your Body Mass Index (BMI), hip to waist circumference, and partaking in…
