What Does Harry's Ruthlessness Mean
Assignment-Moon Up Q7
The storytelling strategies employed in the passage are character revelation, plot advancement, suspense, surprise but not dramatic irony.
Most fundamentally, Harry’s ruthlessness is revealed when he tries to shoot Tom. After Tom refuses to help Harry, Harry “tries to fire the gun” (130). This action shows how ruthless Harry is because it demonstrates that Harry will do anything that is necessary to escape without hesitation even though it is killing his own brother.
With the revelation of Harry’s ruthlessness, the plot advances closer to the breaking point in which Harry dies. When Harry points the gun at Tom, Tom does nothing to prevent Harry because Tom is actually testing Harry to see if Harry will shoot. Eventually

In the play King Henry IV part 1, Shakespeare reflects both sides of Prince Harry, and his reformation that guide him to be a great King. In the beginning King Henry states; “When honor speaks, it speaks about Hotspur. I can only see my own son, Harry, and his reputation for wildness and dishonor.” Harry is known as a disgrace, his days consist in being a thief and not behaving as an honorable prince. He accepts himself as a disaster; and no one thinks that his capacity and attitude can lead him to be a great man with a clever plan. By the middle of the play he exposes his great secret; “I’ll be so wild, I’ll make wildness an art form, then redeem myself when the world least expects me to.” His elaborate plans consist in exhibiting the worst…

Huck’s father is not a very good man, he the town drunk, which is the reason for Hucks bad behavior. Another reason Tom is a bad role model is because he always requires to be the center of attention even when it causes other people harm. This is because tom is somewhat of an only child and no one left in his own family is left to comfort him, the only two people are aunt polly and sid, but sid is a real nuisance to tom and his friends. Toms behavior also breaks out when he tries to get out of trouble and chores. He lies when it comes to chores and tricks aunt polly when he is in trouble. For example it shows imagery when Jem says that “when he guages your eyes out” (17 Lee) He says he will gauge his eyes out when he could have just said that he would kill him. Another device it shows is repetition. In the passage it repeats the word “scared” multiple times. Which also appeals to pathos because it gives it an emotion of being scared or afraid. They also show dialog when Dill and Jem are talking to each other about doing the dare. Another example of a rhetorical device is there is a pattern. Jem gets dared to do something “when I dared him to jump off the house” (17 Lee) and when Dill dared him to touch the house. Then, He uses his sister to try to get out of it. “If I got killed what would become of you?” (Lee 17) and “Jem had a little sister to think of” (17 Lee). Then, he ends up doing it and forgets his responsibility to his sister completely. It happens both when he was dared to jump off the roof of the house and the Radley…

Love, hunting and fighting are adventurous matters, and with Tom's run of the mill lifestyle, he does not encounter any of them. He cannot find love, he does not have anything to hunt, and he does not have enough courage to fight for anything. Another means of Tom's escape are his outings to the movie, which are aided by the fire escape. Tom goes to the movies for several reasons; to satisfy his need for alcohol, to escape his home life, and to experience some adventure. Walter is a black man in the 1950's supporting himself, his wife, son, sister and mother in a small apartment in…

Tom is very narrow-minded, and believes he is much superior to everyone, and therefore, should have everything. This is clearly seen when he brings up his opinion over a book he claims he has been reading, as he says, “this fellow has worked out the whole thing. It’s up to us, who are the dominant race, to watch out or these other races will have control of things”(Pg.16). Tying in with the fact that Tom believes he deserves everything, it becomes clear he also loves to have total control over everything, even people. Thus, ultimately treating people like his property, and manipulating them along the way. This is seen by the fact that Daisy stays by Tom’s side, even though she and everybody clearly know about his mistress. He is able to not only have his wife, but his mistress on the side, who he parades around publicly, to his wife’s humiliation,” I was confused and a little disgusted as I drove away. It seemed to me that the thing for Daisy to do was to rush out of the house, child in arms — but apparently there were no such intentions in her head. As for Tom, the fact that he ‘had some woman in New York.’ was really less surprising than that he had been depressed by a book”(Pg.23). When a situation does not seem to go his way, Tom reacts aggressively, and violently, in an effort to manipulate the situation to benefit him. During one encounter with his mistress, Myrtle, she blatantly causes a scene and rebels against him, “some time toward midnight Tom Buchanan and Mrs. Wilson stood face to face, discussing in impassioned voices whether Mrs. Wilson had any right to mention Daisy's name. Making a short deft movement, Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand”(Pg.41). He is definitely not the type of person to allow people to disobey him or humiliate him, or to even feel like control is slipping away from his…

Situational irony plays a big role in this story’s plot. For example, the wife throws a surprise party, of sorts, for her husband, but instead of being surprised and grateful, he becomes “hotly embarrassed, and indignant at his wife for embarrassing him”. This is ironic because the reader first believes that he will be delighted, but their expectations are not met. The author uses the irony to contradict what the readers expect and create drama and suspense. The irony also serves as a lesson that actions can be misleading and to expect the unexpected.…
