This creative writing piece is in the form of an additional scene to Arthur Millers The Crucible. This scene takes place two months after the end of the Salem witch trials. It is a conversation between Mr Hale and Elizabeth Proctor. It explores and evaluates the long term devastation caused by greed and self-interest. This piece displays how dramatic the effects of greed and selfishness can be. Mr Hale reveals his own inner turmoil since the trials, and how his own pride and arrogance contributed to the hangings. Elizabeth reinforces the idea of morality, mainly in defence of her late husband. This piece is written to serve as an example of how greed can corrupt and destroy everything. It is directed to western society presently as greed is becoming a greater issue in all facets of people’s lives. Taking place in a time where many customs and ideas seem idiotic to the modern world helps provide a sense of irony because as it seems people have evolved and gained more knowledge since then greed is still as devastating regardless of time period.…
The people in Salem had no manners or respect for others. The impact of poor behavior is exhibited throughout “The Crucible”.…
In the Crucible, there are many examples of selfishness. In the end there are very few people who fought for the truth and what was best for everyone before themselves. Most people cared solely about having a good reputation and not who they were stepping on to get there. Two main culprits of this are Thomas Putnam, a greedy property thief, and Abigail Williams, a liar and adulterer.…
Between confessing the affair to Elizabeth to even telling the entire town, Proctor is driven by getting the guilt off of his chest, telling the truth. Overall, Miller accurately displayed the story of the Salem Witch Trials in The Crucible by vividly flaunting the motivation behind multiple characters and allowing the readers to dive into their thoughts. The play depicts that the people that are driven by the truth are the ones that have the most abundant…
In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail and the girls participate in what seemed to be like harmless deception about their doings which turns into lies which even they could not get our of and in the end ended up hurting themselves.…
Within this passage of The Crucible a major theme is brought up, that is good vs evil. The book talks about how society uses these polar opposites to explain away some of the more complex concepts in life. An example of this is shown in this passage when Mrs. Putnam asks, “Is it a natural work to lose seven children before they live a day?” (Miller 45). In her lack of understanding the nature of child death Mrs. Putnam begins to blame the Devil for the misfortune that has befallen her. Mrs. Putnam, much like the rest of society, has used the concept of good and evil, in this case God and the Devil, in order to explain greater phenomenon in life. The book presents us with the idea that evil, what everyone perceives as unjust, is something…
The salem witch trials took place in 1692, back then people believed almost everything they were told. When a well known reverend discovered his daughter, niece, slave, and a couple of girls from town dancing and singing in the woods, his first instinct was to rush over and confront the girls. When he got there the girls faked fainting to try and avoid getting in trouble, by doing so they made the reverend thing witchcraft was among them. He eminently falsely accused his salve for the girls odd behavior, he also summoned reverend Hale who was an “expert” in the field of witchcraft. By doing this reverend parris sealed many of the villagers fait with know, but only time would tell.…
"Because of your political views, you will be completely stripped of your civil liberties." If you lived in America during the period that has come to be known as the "red scare", then you were constantly in danger of hearing fatal words such as these that could completely destroy your life. Arthur Miller wrote a story about this dreadful time, titled The Crucible. Since the subject was controversial at the time, Miller had to subliminally write about it through the story of the Salem witch trials. Basic human rights were violated by HUAC, who was symbolized by the court system in Miller's story. To anyone who didn't confess to their supposed crime, there were severe repercussions, such as death or blacklisting. Senator McCarthy, a corrupt…
Have you ever wanted revenge on someone that has wronged you in the past? Sometimes we find deceitful ways to get revenge on these people. In The Crucible revenge is a common circumstance in the lives of the characters that contributed to the catastrophe.…
When fear grabs hold of somebody craziness erupts and there is no longer peace. When something goes wrong people tend to put the blame on anyone or anything besides themselves. In the crucible the blame is put on innocent women and this created mass hysteria and paranoia in the village. Kristallnacht was a night of violence that created mass hysteria and fear among the innocent Jews, just as Abigail did in The Crucible.…
There are several characters in Arthur Miller’s play “The Crucible”, that despite their accusation of witchcraft, choose the truth before lying and going against their morals, knowing it would claim their lives. The quote can relate to characters like Rebecca Nurse, Giles Corey, and to some extent, John Proctor. They believe that honesty should come before conformity and that you should never betray your ideals even if lying could grant you another day.…
In The Crucible there’s a fine but distinguishable line between doing the right and wrong thing. Sometimes, decisions are made without entirely knowing what the situation is and how it came about. W. Clement Stone once said, “Have the courage to say no. Have the courage to face the truth. Do the right thing because it is right.” Hale follows these expectations to good integrity. When everybody fell in line with the court he saw they were wrong, and he broke away to try to save who was left.…
The crucible shows a lot of lies that overpower the truth told by the innocent…
In Arthur Miller's “The Crucible” the last words uttered by the people at the end of the Salem witch trial were ones with no regret as they hung to death in front of the town. All of these people who were in fact innocent all faced similar problems due to the Puritan religion and government being, in essence, one in the same. Jealousy, revenge, and fear of the unknown sets the stage for how one persons should act vs how the people did act in the religious society.…
