Ignorance and materialism negatively affects humans some way or another, and society only increases these lifestyles. Whether or not we believe it, ignorance and materialism is a daily part in our lives today; thus, we cannot live without it. We try to ease our problems by blindingly accepting society’s norms and trends. Because we cannot formulate our own ideals and ways of life, we live in a false sense of justice and peace. In Tony Hoagland’s “Hard Rain,” the speaker witnesses these faults in our behavior at a shopping mall; however, he, similarly, is not able to escape that reality. The larger meaning of this poem, that we have no sense of individualism and morality, is specified by the author’s usage of diction and the disappointing, humorous, and controversial tone he uses to prove it.…

Ray Bradbury wrote science fiction text because he might know what was going to happen in the future. “ There Will Come Soft Rains” by Ray Bradbury, is about an electrical advanced house because their is a clock going on every 5 minutes. Water is constantly referenced in dialogue, as well as shown visually throughout the film. One of the most clear examples of this appears while Travis writes in his journal, “Thank God for the rain which has helped wash away the garbage and trash off the sidewalks...Someday a real rain will come and wash all this scum off the streets.” These lines are in reference to the Old Testament story of Noah’s Ark, in which God sends a great flood to wash away all of the sinners and evil people of the world. Although there is no reference to a messiah in this story, it is important to consider that Travis hopes the evil around him in New York, will dissipate in an epic biblical fashion. Moving along to visuals, after Travis drops off a prostitute and a John from his cab, he purposefully drives through a spewing fire hydrant as if to wash away the passengers’ indiscretions. Travis is disgusted by the immorality he witnesses in the back of his cab, and seeks baptism by driving out of his way to “cleanse” himself in water. Ironically, right after this scene Travis visits a sexually explicit theater surrounded by lowlives, thereby voiding his desire to be cleansed of any sexual immorality. These allusions to the cleansing powers of water are what put the idea of vigilantism in Travis’s mind. While hanging out in the diner frequented by Travis’s fellow cabbies, one of the drivers proposes Travis should get a gun for protection, and offers him a connection to obtain such weapons. Upon this suggestion, Scorsese focuses the camera for a few moments on a glass of water Travis is drinking. This is meant to suggest that Travis is thinking he can cleanse, or be a savior to New York, by using purchasing guns and using them as he does later in the film. This is a clear criticism of vigilantism because the use of water as religious…

    A Steady Rain

It’s your typical cop movie, findable on the local channels. Two police officers claim to use their power for the good of the people, but find out how much easier it is to take matters into their own hands. Although we all can get this on our television for free, director Tazewell Thompson takes Keith Huff’s “A Steady Rain” and turns it into something worth paying for, or did he? The set is completely simple; as a matter of fact I must say it is very uncreative. There are two seats in the front and several are lined up in the back making two single rows. In the far back and sides of the stage, there are blinds with cracks in it as if people have been peeping through them. No art work, not even a coffee table, just chairs and blinds surrounded the stage. It took a while but it hit me, it is an interrogation room. Now, the only thing I predict coming is be a waste of hard earn money and angry people in the audience asking for a refund. But when the two actors came out and started to talk to the audience as if we were a part of the act, it startled me and caught my attention. I’m really in for the night of my life and if you were in my shoes, you’ll be to. This is definitely not your typical play; loyalty, friendship, and lives are at stake. Huff wants us to understand that it does not matter how long or how close you are with someone because in a split second they can betray you.…

Ian Frazier is popular American satirist. One of his articles posted in “The New Yorker” called “How to operate the shower curtain”. In this article he talks about how to use the simplest thing we could imagine, the shower curtain. The way he describes its use is very ironic and funny, explaining in every detail possible. He says, “Remember to keep the shower curtain inside the tub at all times!” as if showering was an extremely dangerous activity where you have to follow step-by-step instructions (Frazier 1). Not only does he talk about the curtain itself, but also objects associated with showering such as shampoo bottles or even activities you have to perform…

There was one a man who went by the name of Ethan. Ethan had a certain genteel about him, which made it impossible to believe that he was a serial killer. He would go to the neighborhood park and secede himself from the other families, watching and waiting for the perfect moment to kidnap and kill a young girl or boy. The kidnappings were so quick and scrupulous that by the time the parents had noticed the child was missing it was too late. He had a tact with getting away from the crime scene within the blink of an eye. You would think it would be easy to spot a man taking a child away on a tabular playground like the one in the neighborhood. He was the scourge of the neighborhood, but no one knew it was him until the head of the talion department hired the top detective in the country. The detective, Aron Jacobs, could scavenge a piece of evidence that occurred from a crime scene weeks ago and easily give a synopsis on it. Detective Jacobs was no sedentary man, he was always out on the field investigating and deducing situations. His unorthodox genre of dealing with crimes is what lead him to finding the elusive kidnapper Ethan. It was a dark and stormy night. Ominous winds blew through the air as rain poured from the pitch black, starless sky. Detective Jacobs hired a little boy to act as bait for Ethan to grab him. As predicted, Ethan finally shows up and snatches the child in his arms and bolted. Detective Jacobs followed Ethan back to his hideout, where he confronted him at gunpoint. Ethan put his hands up and pretended to surrender, but instead lunged out and attacked Detective Jacobs. Jacobs immediately pulls the trigger blowing a hole in Ethan's head right between the eyes. On the wall behind him was a big tableau made up of different pictures of the children he kidnapped. As a pool of blood emitted from Ethan's dead body, the sun had risen and the rain had stopped, today was the beginning of…
