‘’What do sociologists do?’’ Summary
What do sociologists do? In Collins article, it is told that, as the modern industrialism has developed and options are enlarged societies started to differ too. Sociology is interested in those social institutions and how they should be studied. One of the sociologist’s job is, to show the reality which is already seen but from another point of view. The other is, to show things which we think we know. Human beings difference from animals is the awareness of their actions but we are moved by compulsions of which we are quite unaware. We, human beings, most of us, do not belong to the flat-earth society, our knowledge is not enough at all and this deficiency leads us to make errors. Sociology is not a business which corrects the false beliefs but it questions the reasons of our beliefs. Diverse cultural settings and cross-cultural communication are the most effective social researches. Up to Giddens, sociology is a science but it is different than the science we know(nature science). He says that the difference is that the sociologist makes his research on the subject-subject relations not object-subject relations. This differs a lot because the topic which sociology is working on is already built by the past actors. Social sciences general reasoning’s are up on the human products and their results. That research topics leads Gibbens to come up with the theory that human beings are victims of their own actions, not affected from outside and this is kind of a boomerang.
