What Caused The American Revolution Essay

There are many causes of the American Revolution, but I believe the primary cause was the French and Indian War, which lasted from 1754 to 1763. This war also known as the Seven Years War, changed the relationship between Britain and the American colonies. Not only did this war help start the revolution, but its aftermath did too. A decade of conflicts between British Parliament and the colonists, starting with taxation acts, eventually led to the eruption of the American Revolution in 1775. The French and Indian War ended with the 1763 Treaty of Paris. After 125 years of leaving colonies alone because they see the colonists smuggling and not obeying British laws, Salutary Neglect ends. Salutary Neglect ended as a result of a need for more money; protection from Indian threat; violation of laws must stop; and King George, who was a uncompromising Monarch. Britain constantly gave the colonies a lot of slack in who and how they traded. After the French and Indian War, when Britain was heavily in debt, they reversed this so they could receive more tax and profit revenue from the colonies. This was widely resented by the colonist. The Sugar Act lowered the taxes on sugar and molasses being brought into the colonies. As a result, people from the colonies began to protest, "merchants and artisans viewed the Sugar Act as a threat to their livelihoods, and there were public protests in many port towns."
