What Can You Do With A Mathematics Degree
A pencil lay on a piece of paper next to a still ruler and protractor. You look up at the board and see numbers, equations, and more uncommon things. The teacher begins to inform the class of the assignment, and you pick up the pencil ready to write what you need; even if you don’t fully understand what it is. You begin writing - what seems to be nonsense- on the perfect lined paper, but your mind wanders to the sweet scent of fresh air. The windows have been opened and you can see the beautiful day outside. Now this is the only thing you can focus on, and that’s when the bell rings and a rush of happiness floods over you. This is math class for a lot of students, no matter their age. Some may say that it’s useless for them, and that all …show more content…
But for me, it’s a time where I can be myself. Math is involved in nearly everything in life. Whether it’s just simple addition when counting pennies or finding the perimeter of a newly built house. With math, you are able to learn how to do these certain things. Although it is confusing and difficult at times, I know that it will help me in the future. As it says in the article “What Can You Do With a Mathematics Degree?” by Laura Tucker, having a degree in mathematics can help in any career path. Math is also a big influence in my life because of what my dream job is; architecture. When I’m older I strive to be an architect, so math is very important for me to know - and know properly. An architect's job is based around knowing perimeter, area, length and all those types of things, which is what you will, at some point, learn in math. But math is not involved in just architecture. As it says in the article, “Math Career Resources” on University of California's website, engineering, pharmaceutical jobs and even jobs in the law career involve math. Therefore, no matter what job you decide is right for you, the chance is math will have something to do with it. Math has a very big impact on the

Marilyn Burns, the author of the article "Nine Ways to Catch Kids Up" realizes that a handful of students are at risk in each classroom. Sitting down on the intense artic cold blue seat. I shrived immensely, worried that my desk was having an earthquake. After calming down and positioning myself at an angle away from where the icy cold air was coming from, I was ready. The instructor was having trouble opening the little red plastic tab in which you pull up to get access to the booklet, but after a while, we began to open them, some people had more trouble than others and, I was so anxious, my hand couldn’t stop rambling, almost unable to hold my paper. After starting, all I could hear were small, almost silent cries of surprise, others were with the flimsy pages, turning them back and forth and back again, almost sounded like a bird flapping its wings in a windy day, and the rest were pressing on their calculators, if you paid enough attention, you can make some sort of an upbeat melody. After ignoring all distractions, I managed to get some easy algebra questions, I thought to myself, other than its dull boring appearance, it is not that bad. I fastened my bright yellow, Dixon Ticonderoga pencil into my hand and marched on.…

At the beginning of ninth grade, I was slowly recovering from clinical depression, a cruel, brooding disorder that makes one feel as if they would be content with drowning in the endless unforgiving abyss of the ocean. Along with this pestering grim recovery came the stress and lingering anxiety of potentially failing a freshman math class. Mr. Albaugh, my ninth grade math teacher, was a fairly young, arrogant, but undoubtedly intelligent math teacher. He would always have some kind of smug retort to a student’s question, and upon the remark, “I do not…

Mathematics is highly valued in our society but for many students the thought of learning mathematics is daunting. Learning mathematics in primacy school may have been a positive experience but it may have also been filled with frustration and anxiety. If a teacher has a negative view of mathematics then their students will adopt this view. Students must be shown the relevance and purpose of mathematics in a real life and meaningful way. There is no doubt that mathematics is an indispensable tool for understanding our world. As we move through the twenty-first century no one can be clear on what mathematics will be needed, but it is clear that students will need to know how to reason mathematically and apply mathematical thinking to a wide range of situations (Reys, R. E., Lindquist, M. M., Lambdin, D. V., Smith, N. L., Rogers, A., Falle, J., Frid, S., Bennett, S. (2012). Helping Children Learn Mathematics (1st Australian ed.). “Wrong answer Laurran, do it again,” Mrs. Taylor raised her voice at me. The room went silent. Nobody was talking or moving, to scared to get scolded by Mrs. Taylor. I always wondered who would want to marry her, or how she treated her kids at home. I honestly feel bad for her two kids if she treated her own students this way. I sat there, my eyes tearing up from embarrassment and failure. Mrs. Taylor doesn't understand how hard it is; doing math that is a grade above your level of experience. She doesn’t understand the pressure that is on me from my parents to do good and from the older kids in my class to show them I’m not dumb and I can do this.…

In the aftermath of the previous year’s I realized that if I put my mind and effort in something I can do it. Math was a subject that I thought was going to always bring me down. But since my love for sports is greater I knew I had work I had to do, and now I actually love math. When given the chance I watch math video on YouTube. I have a favorite YouTuber names Vsause. His videos contain a mixture of science, math, and physiology. One particular video that is my favorite is when he is describing how humans have sent out many messages out in space that gives out a descriptions of who and what we are and things that are popular in our society at the time; as well as the coordinates to our location. It’s so interesting how math has a major part in life and in everything we do. When in geometry class I thought to myself “How is this going to help me in the future?” But later on, when reading the history of math, geometry is actually useful. We use if for many things like architectural designing, and in computer…

I had always understood math and it was frustrating to not comprehend what he was doing. Math had always been one of my strongest subjects and I never had trouble making A’s in my previous math classes. I was already so lost in that class that I didn’t even know where to begin. Math is a very important subject to learn. I believe that math is a subject in which you learn about properties and relationships of things using numbers and sometimes symbols. You learn about things from shapes and measurements to patterns and relationships. Math is usually a difficult subject with lots of rules that you take during most or your entire educational career. Math can be boring sometimes, but it can be fun as well sometimes like when we work in groups or do hands on experiments. In IMP we usually work in groups. At our tables we check over our homework answers with one another to see if it is correct. After this we discuss the answers…
