What Are The Pros And Cons Of Texting And Driving
About forty percent of American teens say that they have been in a car where someone has been texting and driving, putting them in the was of danger (“The Dangers of Texting While Driving” 1). Texting and driving has become a major deal over the last several years, due to the increased number of car accidents that have been caused. Texting while driving can put drivers in dangerous situations that they could avoid by just putting their phone away. Over the years texting and driving has become a major issue for not only teens, but adults too. Texting and driving has its pros and many consequences. First, texting and driving had become a major distraction for teen and adult drivers. Texting and driving is a cause of many vehicle accidents. Although texting and driving may seem like there can be no positives, there are a few up sides to texting and driving. In the article, “Pros and Cons of Texting While Driving,” the author states that sending a text can allow the “person who is driving to get their point across quickly and maintain their focus on the road ahead of them” (1). If you are out and about and need to relay a message to someone quickly, sending a text might be your best option. Not always do you have the ability to get your message to someone and texting is a quick and effective way to message someone. It can also be convenient for the receiver of the text because of how quickly they could get a response. Another positive is that you can avoid any long unwanted phone conversations (“Pros and Cons of Texting While Driving” 1). You can “have the conversation, without the same time investmeny” (“Pros and Cons of Texting While Driving” 1). Texting takes away any lengthy phone call that you try to avoid or just do not feel like talking on the phone. Following the positives there are always consequences to texting and

    Reckless driving habits such as texting and drunk driving cause thousands of accidents each year, resulting in many injuries and deaths. In 2010, more than 1.4 million arrests were made for drivers operating under the influence of alcohol and drugs (Impaired Driving 1). In total, 10,228 people were killed in alcohol related crashes in 2010, accounting for 31 percent of all crashes in the United States (Impaired Driving 1). In addition, over 50 percent of teens have admitted to texting behind the wheel (Texting While Driving 2). Although the legal consequences are nowhere as steep as drunk driving, the numbers are just as scary. First of all, lets all admit it. Every one of us has either sent a text message or been in a car with a driver sending texts. The scary truth is that in 2009, 5,474 deaths and nearly 450,000 injuries were sustained in car crashes. Of these, roughly 20 percent of deaths and 5 percent of injuries were caused by the use of a cell phone (Texting While Driving 1). Unfortunately, most people, including myself, were or still are completely unaware of how dangerous texting while driving is.
