Many accidents are blamed on distracted driving and most of the distractions are caused by cell phone usage. However, some opponents feel that creating a law against cell phone use infringes their personal rights. Others think that banning someone from using their cell phones is equivalent to telling someone that they can't adjust their radio or chat with someone else in their car. However, using a cell phone, whether talking or texting, while driving can be extremely dangerous; it should be made illegal because it is very hazardous to yourself and the people surrounding you, can lead to the death of loved ones, and it is even compared to the danger level of drunk driving. Without some type of legislation forbidding this distraction, the problem will only continue to get worse, and people will continue to die. In several recent studies the findings show that text-messaging is one of the most dangerous distractions for the driver. Despite the large number of people that use cell phones or text while they drive, a recent Harris poll shows that 80% of the participants recognize there is a need to create a law forbidding this type of activity while driving (Wiehl, 2007). Through this public support and the recognition of the dangerous consequences of texting while driving the hope is legislators will recognize the need to prevent this dangerous distraction.…

Her mom asked her to go to the store and grab a gallon of milk, her phone went off, and she was tempted to pick it up and read what it said, she thought to herself “it's just a small text, what’s the worst that could happen." Little did she know the car in the next lane ahead of her was swerving and would end up hitting her because she didn't notice the vehicle, why? All because of the small text she was reading and or sending back. If she wouldn't have picked up the phone to read the text, she could've avoided the swerving car and not got hit. We all know the times we are in the car, and our phones go off, and we are tempted to pick them up and check them or send a simple text back maybe even take that quick phone call. But little do we know how big of a distraction that is and the lives we put in…

First of all, distraction is one of the major causes leading to accidents. From the moment of picking up the phone, to read a text, to the moment it is being put back down, there is a loss of sight from the road which could either result in a life threatening accident, or a lucky escape from a life threatening accident. A Nationwide survey has shown that 45 percent of Americans said they've either been hit or nearly hit by a driver on a cell phone (Saletan 2). It is a split second of loss of focus on the road that could cost someone their life. Texting while driving makes people lose vision from the road and makes them forget what is going on around them, and that is what makes it so dangerous. One study showed that “the more tasks you dump on drivers—listening, evaluating, answering questions—the worse they perform. They drift off course, miss cues, overlook hazards, and react slowly. It's the picture of a mind being sucked from one world into another”(Saletan 2). All of these add up to a series of events which can occur to a driver while texting behind the wheel who did not even notice what happened. That is when they suddenly look up and try to react in time while it is actually already too late to react, and they end up in an accident. People do not see the real danger of it until either they themselves experience a life threatening accident while texting and…

This public service advertisement portrays texting and driving as a cause of injury that can be prevented. It seeks to get people to change their behavior by using a close up image of a man being punched in the face, comparing his reaction to that of cars crashing into each other due to texting and driving. A close-up view is more effective than a shot taken further away because the detail highlights the violence of the punch. We are able to see the pain in the man's face while the spit is forced out of his mouth. This is used to show how aggressive the punch is, comparing it to the violence and injury that can be caused by a car accident due to texting and driving. Cell phones are considered such a necessity that the issue has ascended regarding the use of phones while driving. These days, phones have gotten even more complex and interactive; we use them as a means for communication by voice, text, sound, and…

It was an evening I will never forget. What I saw that night will impact me for the rest of my life. The night started off normally. My girlfriend and I went out to enjoy a nice dinner with my family, but the night took an unexpected turn on our way home. We were driving along I17 and decided to exit the freeway to stop and get gas. We noticed a car fly by us at an incredibly fast rate of speed, and my girlfriend noticed that the driver was texting on her phone. The exit curved sharply to the right and when we turned we saw the car that was traveling too fast t-boned in the air, on a light pole. It was the most graphic site I have ever seen. It was a situation where I did not want to look but I could not pull my eyes away. My girlfriend got on the phone and called 911 right away and they said officers were on their way, so we pulled around into a shopping center to see if we should offer help. I was actually afraid to go see if the people in the car were okay, but we walked over, and knew by the blankets covering the windows that there were no survivors. Both the driver and the passenger were killed on impact. It was clear that the driver of the car was distracted and lost control of the vehicle. I was completely shaken up by the…

It has been proven scientifically that texting while driving reduces your awareness by almost half, and that texting while driving is over four times more dangerous than driving under the influence of alcohol. These are very disturbing results for anyone on the road, especially since it has been proven that an estimated 65% of drivers are texting and driving every single day. There are some opponents of the new laws that punish drivers that text. Their primary argument is that texting while driving is the least of the dangers we have on the road compared to driving with under the influence of alcohol. We should continue to support the decisions that were made to ban the use of texting while driving. Such behavior has huge unintended consequences- serious injury or death of drivers and passengers but it also can lead to distractions while driving.…
