The success J.Crew has had is thanks to their current chairman known as the “Retail King”, Millard Drexler.
Formal CEO of Gap, Millard Drexler, has found the way to meld the merchandise from stores and catalogues into one consistent product. In previous years, one of the main issues J Crew had was that their catalogue merchandise was not consistent with those they had in retail stores. Furthermore, another business strategy they have utilized is the importance they give to their quality, value, and design, but also taking into consideration that they need to be loyal to their opening price points. Differentiating themselves from stores such as Zara, where they offer not only in trend fashion merchandise, but also offer a long lasting quality. In other words, it is not fashion for the moment, but fashion for a
lifetime.
In their retail stores, they consider it essential to mix different types of merchandise to highlight the variety of their products. This gives them a competitive advantage over other retail stores because it motivates the customer to purchase not only clothing, but also accessory merchandise. With the help of their sales representatives, they may have even more revenues if they use the opportunity to act as stylist and help their customers mix and match the current trends of the season. As a company, they contemplate the importance to appeal emotionally to their customers. They consider themselves a customer-oriented company. Similar to Nordstrom, they believe that customer service is an essential part on the industry. As a successful establishment they consider that entertaining the customer and keeping them engaged with the brand is indispensible. Millard Drexler’s motto is “Not to leave yourself vulnerable to competition”.
