What Affects The Rate Of Photosynthesis Lab
Based off the results from this lab the student was able to determine and have an overall better understanding of the variables that affect the rate of photosynthesis in a plant. The first variable the student tested in the lab was 30cm of light with CO2 present. The student started this trial with all 10-leaf disks and timed how many leaf disks came up every minute for 15 minutes. One minute into the trial and the student recorded that no leaf disks had yet to rise to the top of the solution. At three minutes into the trial the student recorded that no leaf disks had still yet to rise to the top of the solution. Then at five minutes into the trial the student witnessed the first change as 2 leaf disks had floated up to the top of the solution. …show more content…
Carbon fixation occurs in the stoma of a plant and results in glucose being produced. In this process the first step is that CO2 is accepted by the 5C compound RuBP to form a 6C compound, which is then, split into 2 GP molecules. From here these GP molecules are turned in triose phosphate by adding energy. These triose phosphate then double up to form glucose. The cycle finishes when the leftover GP molecules are met with a carbon acceptor and converted into RuBP, which is then joined with carbon dioxide to re-start the cycle.
3. The process that causes the leaf disks to rise is photosynthesis. In photosynthesis light is added to convert CO2 to oxygen gas. This gas accumulates in the leaf disk over a typically short amount of time causing the leaf to rise up.
4. The trial that worked the best in the lab would have to be the 30cm light CO2 trial. This trial worked the best because it was the ideal environment for the leaf disks to rise. Since the light was somewhat close to the leaf disk and there was C02 present in the water the leaf disks were able to go through photosynthesis at the fastest pace with all 10 disks rising.
5. The purpose of using the water soap solution for one of the trial was for it to serve as the control trial of the lab. This trial showcased the effects of no C02 on the rate of photosynthesis since it was the only trial in the experiment without C02 in

If the leaf disks were boiled then the expected result would be for all of the leaf disks to sink. This is because photosynthesis would not be able to occur since the proteins would have been denatured and no longer functional. There would also no longer any space for gas to enter in the first place since the protein composition would be all messed up.
8. Light intensity affects the rate of photosynthesis because light is the one of the limiting factors in photosynthesis. The higher the light potential is the more packets of light are said to be hitting the plant. At low intensity’s of light photosynthesis is know to be low, while at higher light intensity’s the rate of photosynthesis is higher. With this being said As the light intensity is risen from low light intensity to high light intensity, the rate of photosynthesis will increase because there is more light available to drive the reactions of

More specifically, however, this experiment focused on the photo part of photosynthesis, or the light dependent reactions in chloroplasts. Light dependent reactions require the presence of light to function, so that this light can be taken to create ATP and to reduce NADP+ to NADPH. Consequently, light dependent reactions shut down in the absence of light, thereby stopping the production of ATP and NADPH (Sadava et al. 2012). With this information, an experimental hypothesis can be formed that the presence of light will cause the redox activity of the spinach chloroplasts to increase, while the absence of light will cause this activity to decrease. One possible null hypothesis could be that there will be no significant difference in redox activity between spinach chloroplasts that are under light and in the dark. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis must be that there will be a difference in this activity between the two groups of chloroplasts. To test these hypotheses, chloroplasts were extracted from spinach leaves in order to create enriched chloroplasts, which were a vital…

HYPOTHESIS: I predict that the rate of oxygen produced increases, as the light intensity increases, but only to a point. I predict this will happen because the plant will have enough carbon dioxide and water to keep up with the amount of light that there is. When there is less light intensity, photosynthesis will happen at a slower rate because gradually there will not be enough sunlight as there is carbon dioxide and water.…

    9. When the student took the apparatus outside, a few variables were changed, e.g. light intensity, temperature, humidity, and air movement. It would have been better if the student had just used a lamp to investigate the amount of sunlight. Therefore, not as many variables affect the experiment. The student took the second set of readings straight away and ‘without delay’, so the new rate was not established.…
