From recent market research, Shuzworld has decided to launch a new product line in California and southwest United States called the Maui Sandal. But first, Shuzworld must determine if the new product line will be profitable to the company before starting production. Hetty Tarbox, Shuzworld’s market research manager for casual footwear, anticipates the Maui Sandal to be very well received and has geared up to produce batches of 10,000. Catharine Pang predicts the first batch will take 1,000 labor hours to produce based on prior experience with previous new lines of footwear. The labor costs on a hourly rate average of $1.08 in U.S. dollars. After analyzing the data from prior new product launches, the employee learning curve for is typically about 80%.
Learning curves are based on the premise that people and organizations become better at their tasks as the tasks are repeated. As firms and employees perform a task over and over, they learn how to perform more efficiently. This means that task times and costs decrease. (Heizer & Render, 2011, p. 770).

All employees want a fair and accurate performance evaluation. It’s it important that an evaluation reflect each employee’s job duties and how well they have performed. In this scenario, the engineer’s first performance review ended with him being angry over the way in which he was being evaluated. There were three main issues with the engineer’s evaluation. The engineer felt that no one in the company, including the plant manager was qualified to complete his annual review. He felt this way because he is the only trained engineer in the company. As a result, the engineer had little confidence in the way that he was being evaluated and was upset that most of his review was based on relationships with other co-workers and his own personal characteristics. For the second annual review the plant manager is exploring other options when it comes to evaluating the engineer.…

The coefficient approach is the best method for the company to use. The coefficient approach allows Shuzworld to determine the overall labor hours needed to produce the sandals, and determine the hours of production cost by multiplying the labor hours by the cost of labor, and divide that number by the amount of units made. The coefficient approach calculates the require units number, by multiplying the labor hours required for manufacturing the first units by the learning curve coefficients for the required units.…
