Company Overview
WestJet Airlines Ltd. is a Canadian low-cost carrier that provides scheduled and charter air service to 85 destinations in Canada, the United States, Europe, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, and has partnership agreements with over 30 airlines around the world. Founded in 1996, it is currently the second-largest Canadian air carrier, behind Air Canada. (Wikipedia)
WestJet is a public company with more than 9,600 employees, is non-unionized and is not part of any airline alliance. It operates variants of a single aircraft type, all from the Boeing 737 Next Generation family, and its subsidiary WestJet Encore also operates the Bombardier Q400. The airline's headquarters is located adjacent to the Calgary International Airport, and its largest hub, in terms of daily departures, is Toronto Pearson International Airport. (Wikipedia)
As of August 29, 2013, it operated a fleet of 103 Boeing Next-Generation 737-600, 737-700 and 737-800 aircraft. Both the 737-700 and 737-800 series aircraft are all equipped with blended winglets. This technology improves the aerodynamic performance and handling characteristics of the 737 while boosting range and reducing fuel burn by up to four per cent. (WestJet, WestJet Backgrouner)
WestJet is the world-wide leader and the first carrier in Canada to adopt Required Navigation Performance (RNP) approach technology to land aircraft. RNP utilizes Global Positioning System satellites to allow aircraft to fly direct and precise approaches to airports. This shortens flight time and miles flown, also reducing fuel burn and emissions. (WestJet, WestJet Backgrouner)
