Most people, when searching to be quickly hired onto a job, turn to fast food chains or supermarkets. My friends have told me a lot of stories about searching for jobs like these ones, but I myself have never had to look for work or go to an interview. Although, I can relate to some of Franklin’s experiences. My family owns a Chinese restaurant, and I have been helping out ever since I was eight. A resume was not needed for me to land the job, but I am better trained than most people who apply and join our crew. In “Working at Wendy’s”, a customer mentions, “Have you ever thought about college” (Franklin 27). I often get the same question from regular customers. They assume I will pursue a college education to acquire a job with better conditions…

Criminal background checks (CBC), however, are complicated because records are decentralized and maintained at the federal, state, and county levels. Your institution may need to check the records in each state and county in which a person has lived over the past five to 10 years. A 2004 survey by the Society for Human Resources Management found a substantial increase since 1996 in the number of employers performing various background checks on potential employees (Hughes et. al., 2007). The popularity of such checks is growing in part because electronic-data-collection techniques make it quicker and easier to find out information about current and prospective employees. Also, “high-dollar verdicts against organizations and institutions for negligently hiring employees have focused employers on potential liability. Criminal-background checks are becoming a common element of faculty and administrative searches” (Der Werf, 2006 pg.33). Many state, and an increasing number of private colleges, are requiring background checks prior to or as part of job…

David Kenner’s Food, Inc. reveals the dark, corporate underside of America’s food industry that nobody seems to be talking about. The documentary opens with the image of the quintessential American farm, deemed the “pastoral fantasy.” Using a voiceover the narrator takes us to various aisles in the super market, explaining how the food industry has revolutionized over the years (boneless meat, assembly lines, food items no longer being seasonal) but more importantly introduces the costs of this transformed food industry. The remainder of the film is broken up into chapters that hone in on the various costs and consequences of America’s food industry.…

McDonalds celebrated its 50th anniversary in April 15, 2005 and remained true to the statement "As far as I can tell, the only place you can't get a Big Mac is in outer space." (1990) The company operates as a global business through franchising. In 2004, the company reported to have established 30,000 local restaurants located in 115 countries across five continents. It is the biggest fast food retailer conquering markets worldwide. In almost every country in the world, there is a McDonalds restaurant and in a single state or region, there are several branches. The company has spread so widely that the term “mcDonaldization” (1998) was coined to describe the organization and culture of the company. The term has evolved to refer to the general business strategy of expansion.…
