In spite of the growing awareness of wellness world wide, stress related problems are still very evident in our workplaces. Absenteeism and Employee turnover being part of the major ways stress manifests. This proposal used both the combination of interview and literature review as the research method to detect the wellness needs of ABC plc in order to proffer solution to the problem of stress in the workplace. Discoveries reveal that turnover rate is still as high as 20% for this relatively small organisation, while that of absenteeism is 14.68 % per annum. Based on these findings a stress management program is prescribed as the possible solution to this lingering problem. None the less, a healthy lifestyle is the key to complete wellness. Introduction 1.1 General Overview

As popular as the word “Wellness” is, there has not been a universal definition that captures it, in spite of the fact that wellness or health is one of those words that are commonly used all over the world (Kemm and Close,1995). On the other hand there has been a set of regular characteristics seen in the most thoughtful effort to define wellness (definition of wellness, nd). We often see wellness defined as a “state of wellbeing” or a “state of acceptance or satisfaction with our present condition.” But really, wellness is not too easy to define, Wikipedia describes wellness as a term generally used to mean a healthy balance of the mind, body and spirit that results to an overall feeling of wellbeing, while World Health Organization (WHO) gives their definition from the perspective of health, as ‘a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’ (cited in Archer, 2001). But for the purpose of this report, wellness will be defined as a multidimensional state of being describing the presence of positive health in an individual as exemplified by quality of life be and a sense of wellbeing.(Corbin, nd). According to Kemm and Close (1995) research, they revealed that every ancient school of medicine has always included teaching on how people could protect their health, ancient Greek too wrote on the importance of diet and exercise, while the traditional Chinese medicine and the papyri from ancient Egypt included extensive advice on how to stay healthy and avoid disease with instructions of healthy living. All of these points suggest that the concept of wellness has been around for ages. (Ardell, 2006) The importance of wellness to mankind can not be over emphasized; no wonder the saying that “health is wealth” is generally used worldwide. There has been so much misconception that money can give the comfort of life, but financial wealth is just only one part of the wellness dimensions (Corbin, nd) and can not substitute for wellness or good health. An et al., 2008 reports that the US government spent 2.106 trillion dollars in the year 2006 on health care. Figure 1.1 gives a diagrammatic representation of the expenditures.
