Betty Stinson, born February 13 1935, is a 78 year old woman currently living with my mother. She is my grandma on my maternal side. Betty’s typical day starts around eight am, waking up to go to the bathroom down the hall. She needs to use her walker because she can not walk without some assistance. From there she walks back to her room and catches up on all her morning programs. My mother normally wakes up and gets breakfast to her by 10am. She continues to watch TV until her afternoon nap between 1 and 2pm. When she wakes up, she watches her evening programs and walks around the house. Dinner is usually ready anywhere between 6-8pm. She doesn’t really get to sleep till around 11:30 because she has insomnia and tosses and turns all night. Betty looks great and is in good health. Her words “Not a damn thing is wrong with my health.” She is disabled but communicates great. She suffers from a little arthritis. Needs her walker to get around, she doesn’t move very fast anymore. She has a special recliner in her room that helps lift her up. She just recently lost 45lbs and is now down to 199lbs. She said she hasn’t weighed below 200lbs in 30+ years. My grandma currently lives in Forest Hill, CA with my mother, step-dad, and step-sister. They have lived up there in the mountains for 3 years. By now she is used to living out there but it took some time getting used to, because she is used to the city. The hills out there are silent and they don’t have many neighbors. The thing that matters most to her is family. It makes her sad that in the last couple years, not many family members call, mail anything or come by. She just sees whoever comes to visit my mother’s house. The only thing she could think about not having done was her knee surgery but said she doesn’t plan on having it done. She is very happy with what she has accomplished in life. She just needs to go shopping for some clothes since she lost so much weight. Her biggest

Karen Thomas, is a 65-year-old female who visits our hospital frequently. Previously, she has been to our Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) for multiple falls, dehydration, alcohol withdrawal and Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA). She was never married, retired, low income and lives at senior citizen home alone. She is currently on Medicare. She does not have any children. She has a sister who lives 15 miles away from her place. I remember her because she is a nonadherence patient who completely ignores any healthcare professionals advise, is mean to the healthcare staffs and always threating to leave Against Medical Advice (AMA). She came to the hospital 2 months ago for multiple falls and had fracture of her hip. She could barely walk but refused…

I have left for extended periods for professional or academic ventures in the past but Vanessa and I both are deeply rooted in my parent’s home. Between December of 2008 and July of 2009 Vanessa lost a grandmother, two great grandmothers and a great grandfather. She was blessed with seven years of her life in which she was able to get to know the generation of people that she had come from. In 2005 her father moved in with his elderly mother and grandmother after his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer; shortly thereafter my maternal grandfather began to rapidly deteriorate, physically and mentally, at which time he moved in with us. Vanessa gained a great respect for the elderly as well as life experiences and knowledge one can only gain by exposure to older generations; however, these blessings came with lessons in illness and death and the real life challenge of coping with the sadness of end of life deterioration and the loss of loved ones. Vanessa understood that death was the inevitable end to life in the flesh, but she also understood that her loved ones were starting a new life in heaven. Instead of displaying exclusively classic signs of grief that would normally be seen in a child her age under the circumstances, she approached coping with a bitter sweet perspective that…

The cost of providing long-term care, particularly institutional care, has increased dramatically. In the nation, long-term care has become a major component of the budget, with national public expenditures totaling $58 billion in 1996 (Burwell, 1996). About $2billion of the U.S.’s budget is allocated to long-term care. Combined with high costs is a criticism that the system of long-term care is biased towards delivering care in the Nursing home setting, despite older people’s documented preferences for in-home care. Keeping a family member at home who is in need of care raises a variety of concerns in addition to the basic logistics. It means trusting a stranger to have total and virtually unsupervised control over your family member. In an assisted-living facility, even if supervision is lax, there is some sense of accountability and oversight that is absent in a home care arrangement. Contacting with an agency might offer some of this oversight, but it would make the proposition very expensive, and even then, the supervision would be cursory at best, although the agency would provide some reassurance of backup services and prior screening. In addition to safety and freedom from abuse, there are also fears about…

On April 10th 2010, my dad informed me that my grandmother had passed away. She was 90-years-old, and although she may have lived a long life, the last eight or so years of her life were very rough. The official reason she passed away was because of Lewy Body Dementia. This degenerative disease, meaning it is not reversible, is thought to have sprouted from an infection she had in her kidneys in 2002. She lived at home for a while after her kidney disease was found and treated, but was moved to an assisted living center in 2007 because of occasional hallucinations, and family was unable to stay with her at her home. As time progressed, her dementia got worse. She slowly started having hallucinations more frequently, became very forgetful, and eventually was unable to perform any tasks on her own. “Dementia is a loss of brain function that occurs with certain diseases. It affects memory, thinking, language, judgment, and behavior,” stated by Google Health.…
