Welfare: a Government Program Disaster
What costs the federal government more than education and protection services like fire and police departments combined? Welfare does, and it costs the American Government over 431.5 billion dollars in the year 2011 alone. Welfare takes money out of hard working taxpaying citizen’s wallets and puts it into the hands of lazy non tax paying citizens. This program encourages the American citizen to not work so that some other person can work to pay for what the unemployed want.
In the words of the Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich: "If society is responsible for everything, then no one is personally responsible for anything. Without personal responsibility there cannot be freedom." Our government is teaching the American people the opposite right now. They are giving Welfare recipients freedom, but no added responsibility. Welfare is taking freedom from American taxpayers and adding the responsibility of funding other people’s lives.
The founding fathers of this country fought and died to have a government that was over controlling on its people’s personal lives. They stated that the main purpose of government was to maintain peace. We have moved far away from this purpose and now we are told we must pay for someone else’s personal mistakes. Nowhere in the constitution did it say that the American people should fund other people’s lives.
Everyone growing up in America has a choice. That choice is to either get an education and go to work, or to be lazy and not do anything with their life except steal from the people who have worked hard in life. The people who didn’t work hard with a job or in school when they were young are the people the hard workers will pay for in the future.
Some people say that this program’s purpose is to not to pay for the lazy, but to pay for the people that can’t physically or mentally work. I have no problem assisting the incapable in having basic living requirements, but the fact is that most of the people on Welfare are
