The act is officially defined as “The process of enlarging the muscles through a regime usually combining strenuous exercise with a specialized diet (“Bodybuilding,” def. 2). Many of the practitioners, however, prefer a slightly different definition from the International Federation of Bodybuilding “Train to develop all body parts and muscles to maximum size, but in balance and harmony”. In modern times bodybuilding has evolved from a recreational activity into defining a way of life, and contrary to popular belief bodybuilding isn’t simply the act of picking up weights and placing them down. To better comprehend its culture it’s important to understand…

Olympic weight lifting consists of lifting a single barbell with maximum pound weights on either side. Trainees and athletes run, use dumbbells, jump rope, and do body weight exercises. Body weight training consists of exercises that do not incorporate objects or weights, such as pull-ups, sit-ups, and squats. CrossFit describes its strength and conditioning program as “constantly varied, high intensity, functional movement,"[4] with the stated goal of improving fitness (and therefore general physical preparedness), which it defines as "work capacity across broad time and modal domains."[5] Workouts are typically short—20 minutes or less—and intense, demanding all-out physical exertion. They combine movements such as sprinting, rowing, jumping rope, climbing rope, flipping tires, weightlifting, carrying heavy objects, and many bodyweight exercises; equipment used includes barbells, dumbbells, gymnastics rings, pull-up bars, kettlebells, medicine balls, and boxes for box jumps.[6][7][8] These elements are mixed in numerous combinations to form prescribed "Workouts of the Day" or "WODs". Hour-long classes at affiliated gyms, or "boxes," typically include a warm-up, a skill development segment, the high-intensity WOD, and a period of individual or group stretching. Performance on each WOD is often scored and/or ranked to encourage competition and to track individual progress. Some affiliates offer additional classes, such as Olympic weightlifting, which are not centered around a WOD.[9]…

CrossFit has started something…something that was unknowable or maybe even impossible before. The answer to “What’s possible?” is improving. Greg Glassman founded CrossFit, Inc. in 2000. By 2005 there were 13 affiliates, today there are more than 6100. The "CrossFit Games" have been held every summer since 2007. The prize money for each first-place male and female has grown from $500 at the inaugural Games, to $275,000 in 2013. In 2007, about 70 gathered – in 2013 there were over 140,000 “Open” participants. The sports of Bodybuilding and Power lifting may seem like the same thing to most, when in fact, they are worlds apart. The same basic guidelines and principals apply to each, but the way in which the goals are met, are completely different. Most people would view a large muscular person as being fit, and strong, but that is not always the case. Likewise, the same people might think a seemingly overweight person would not be fit when in fact he or she could be tremendously skilled and athletic. Both forms of weight training use Compound movements, Diet, and the Competitions, but they are used differently.…

The summer, a time of warm weather, long weekends, friends and holidays. It is also the time where many of us put down the junk food, get off the couch and come out of winter hibernation to enjoy the outdoors. It’s often not long after playing your first game of beach volleyball or running to catch the bus when you realise that your heart is racing, sweat is pouring down your face and you are breathing heavily. As you look up and watch everyone still running around you or as your stepping onto the bus only one thought is running through your mind “WOW I am out of shape!”. Now I am not here today to try and convince you to get into better shape. Starting a fitness routine is a commitment that an individual needs to decide on for themselves when the time is right for them. It is at this time when many people have the same debate, do you shell out the money for a gym membership? or do you invest in a home gym? My goal today is to persuade you so when or if you do decide to start a fitness routine you will choose to or at least consider the benefits of purchasing a gym membership over investing in a home gym. I believe this can be done by examining what many people think are the benefits of investing in a home gym. Which are saving money, convenience, and not having to deal with other members. After looking at these three points it will become clear that not all of them are completely true and joining a gym can satisfy these needs just as well if not better.…

In my work I am going to explore advantages of calisthenics in comparison with weight training. Calisthenics and weight lifting are forms of strength training which help to develop better stamina, healthier bones, and of course, stronger muscles (Hill, 2011). The difference between these two types of workouts is that calisthenics is a combination of different exercises which use only person’s body’s weight and body’s resistance as an equipment (3fatchicks.com, 2009). Weight training is another form of exercises, which requires the use of weighted equipment or resistance machines (3fatchicks.com, 2009) and increases muscle size (3fatchicks.com, 2009).…
