Prompt 5: What did your parents do that fostered a fixed or growth mindset in you? Do you praise your children’s intelligence, creativity, or other characteristics to make them feel talented or smart? Think of the last time you did this. How could you have given growth oriented praise instead? As I child growing up I was raised by my grandmother. She wasn’t very vocal in her praises of good doing instead she’d by a gift to show she cared, so I never knew if I was doing good unless I got a present. Fast forward to me as an adult with my own children, I praise them for everything. In the beginning it was hard only because I wasn’t sure what to say. I was proud but I didn’t want to start the habit of buying things, in habit they would expect thing whether they really did well or thought they did well because I didn’t hear much as a child. My husband’s family helped my flourish vocally with my children. I have a 4 year old and 2 year old, I now see that my oldest will praise the youngest and vice versa. I’m proud of that, they encourage themselves. My 2 year old is potty training. Day by day I can see the progress, sometimes he goes alone, ill hear the toilet flush and happy feet running towards me screaming “yay, momma I did it”, it so awesome when the progress is right before your eyes and we both can recognize it. Now, when I hear the toilet in the middle of the night we might have a party, we’ll be officially potty trained. Yay!!
