"Diverticulitis is a condition in which diverticuli in the colon rupture. The rupture results in infection in the tissues that surround the colon” (MedicineNet, 2010, para.1). Or at least that’s what MedicineNet.com states that it is. Sometimes what we find on the Internet isn’t as reliable as what we may think. Doing research and finding correct and reliable information is very important in the nursing practice. There is so much information available at our fingertips, but finding accurate information is sometimes a challenge and can be detrimental to patient care if the information found is inaccurate. The purpose of this assignment is to evaluate the validity of three health websites.
The first website that I will evaluate is MedicineNet. This site has been around since 1996 and is owned and operated by WebMD. “It provides easy-to-read, in-depth, authoritative medical information for consumers via its robust, user-friendly, interactive website” (MedicineNet, 2010, para.1). The site does not have an author or director; rather it is controlled by qualified executives in the fields of medicine, healthcare, Internet technology and business and is “doctor-produced” by more than 70 physicians.
The site URL is www.medicinenet.com. The main office is in San Clemente, California and the corporate office is in New York City. In lieu of an email address, the website provides you with a contact page to submit your questions. This address is https://data.webmd.com/sdclive/SdcForm.aspx?FormId=MedNetContact. The website was last updated on November 19, 2010 so the information provided is up to date. WebMD will not accept Advertising that “is not factually accurate and in good taste” (MedicineNet, 2010, para. 3). They determine the type of advertising that is acceptable to display on the site but they do not promote products or services.

    Diverticula are small pockets that form along the inside of the colon; when asymptomatic, this is referred to as diverticulosis (Venes, 2005). Although diverticulosis is present in approximately two thirds of the elderly population, the majority of patients will remain completely asymptomatic (McGarry, 2011). Pain, anorexia, vomiting, constipation or diarrhea, urge to void or defecate more than normal, bloody bowel movements, bloating, gas, and fever are all characteristic of diverticulitis (Truven, 2012); in severe cases patients will present with intestinal perforation, hemorrhage, abscess formation, peritonitis, and fistula formation.     When pouches called diverticula form on the wall of the colon become inflamed it becomes diverticulitis a very pain disease no one is sure what causes diverticulitis for sure, but doctors believe a low fiber diet may be a leading cause behind it. Diverticulitis was not very known 100 years ago due to the low percent of people contracting the disease. There are many more cases of diverticulitis then there was at any other point of history. The reason more and more people and starting to get diverticulitis is that; people now eat too much processed foods. The bowels work at a high volume and a low pressure. Processed foods have a very low volume and therefore require a high pressure to excrete the feces. The higher pressure from pushing can damage your colon, and anus. Eliminating waste should be easy for the body, not a high pressure challenge. When the feces is moving through the intestinal wall and there is a high amount of pressure the walls begin to get pressed upon by the feces. When the feces begins to press on the folds of the intestinal wall they become stuck inside the folds,and push out and hemorrhage the walls causing small papules, in which become inflamed and infected with a lot of bacteria becoming diverticulitis. Diverticulitis is found in 50-70% of people aged 80 years and older and 80% of the people with diverticulitis are age 50. Diverticulitis is not usually found in people younger than 40, Africans, and Asians. The most common regions diverticulitis affects is U.S.A., Europe, and Australia.
