We Day Application Essay Sample
To be perfectly honest, when I was nominated to attend We Day last November, I was excited for only one shallow reason: some of the cast of Degrassi would be there. Degrassi is a Canadian teen melodrama that I watched religiously throughout my middle school and high school years. I find it ironic that something that had been a colossal waste of my time would actually lead me to find my passion in life. We Day is an event created by the founders of Free the Children that celebrates youth philanthropy efforts. Students earn their tickets through global and local service. Last year was the first year my high school participated. My guidance counselor nominated me to attend because of my volunteer work in our school’s Key Club. I was not completely hooked by the opportunity until I saw the list of past and present speakers, which included Malala Yousafzai. Malala is one of my foremost role models in life for her unrelenting activism for female education and the youngest ever Nobel Prize laureate. Unfortunately, she would not be …show more content…
To empower a mother with a steady income is to allow her children to get an education. This event not only educated me on this subject, but it also provided me with an outlet to contribute to this cause. My school’s students who attended We Day started a club called the We Care Team. Our global goal was to fundraise for the Goat Project we learned about at We Day. For only $50 we could provide a mother in need of income overseas with a goat. Goats are easy to feed without causing extra stress on the family’s finances and families can sell their milk as a sustainable source of income. After receiving the initial goat, mothers can subsequently invest in more to increase their business. As vice president of the group, I helped organize a dunk tank with teachers as “victims” at a school event. We raised just over $300; which is enough to for six goats to empower six

“I attribute my success to this - I never gave or took any excuse." (Florence Nightingale) The reasons that I wish to pursue a Masters of Science in Nursing are many. I have been practicing as a nurse since I graduated with a BSN degree in 2010 from East Tennessee State University. For two years I have worked as a Dialysis Unit Nurse and it has been during this time that my passion for the vocation of nursing has truly bloomed. Through this experience I have learned the value of keeping to one’s dreams and persevering. Despite the fact it has taken me some time to obtain my Bachelors degree it has only inspired me to continue on to get my Masters so I can expand my knowledge of the nursing profession and all that it entails. A Masters degree would also help me in my future career goals and aspirations, which is to be able to assist those in the rural areas of our community.…

Samuel Clemens advised “Go to bed early, get up early-this is wise”, and by appreciating the soundness of his words, rarely, if ever, do I find myself in the chaos of late morning traffic. By accomplishing little everyday small tasks such as getting up early in time for a healthy breakfast or studying in motivating environments allows me to be extremely productive and effective as a student at the Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC). For the past seven months, I’ve held an environmental specialist internship at the Santa Rosa Water Department that goes hand-in-hand with my dedication and efforts at the junior college. Over the past two years, it has been my pleasure to participate in courses and to become a part of the SRJC culture. I am motivated and eager to continue to develop a strong background of calculus, general chemistry, biology and critical thinking, and expanding physics, engineering and organic chemistry. My overarching education goal is to receive a bachelors of science in environmental engineering or hydrologic science. My top three universities of choice are UC Berkley and Cal Poly for their environmental engineering programs and UC Santa Barbara for hydrologic…

Throughout the past few years I have taken part in many projects and activities to foster education and global engagement. The most recent is my upcoming outreach trip to the Agnes Zabali Boys and Girls Club. This trip was planned by myself, 3 other education students and our faculty supervisor. The purpose of this trip is to provide support for the Agnes Zabali Boys and Girls Club (AZBGC). As Education students, we are taking this opportunity to provide daily lessons for the children who visit the Boys and Girls Club. We started the planning in September and we have put in over 120 hours since then in order to make this trip as beneficial for the children at the AZBGC. Apart of this planning, we have raised funds to help support the children's’ education costs. While planning for this outreach trip, I decided to partner with a local grade seven class to teach them about social justice. Their classroom teacher told me that with the recent media attention in the USA she is having difficulty teaching her students about justice and discrimination. We decided to partner together to teach both the Ugandan Children as well as the Canadian grade seven class about what it is like to live in a different part of the world. This partnership will entail writing letters to each other as well as creating a video about life in each of their respective locations.…

Bryant McGill once said, "Whatever makes you uncomfortable is your biggest chance at growth". No matter the situation, people usually will either follow or lead. As a freshman in high school, I was the follower, never fully realizing my potential of being the leader. Finding myself would take time, and a lot of encouraging along the way. Going into my freshman year, my participation in class government was mostly a popularity contest. Which meant not so much about leading a particular class or group of people. I didn't find myself thinking about running for any major ASB (Associated Student Body) position. A larger, more pronounced position in ASB would mean being uncomfortable in more situations and also having to grow into true leadership.…

The journey taken by Malala Youzafzai was not an easy one. She was born to an illiterate mother and a hardworking father in the beautiful valley of Swat in Pakistan. She stood up for the right of education for the fellow young girls in Pakistan with full determination and spirit and fought against the Taliban. Her father Ziauddin Yousafzai, an education activist was her greatest inspiration and motivated her to stand up as an advocate for education and freedom. Unlike other Pakistani girls, Malala was not fearful of covering her head with a scarf rather than putting on a burqa. She did not believe in hiding the girls and women behind the curtains and seizing their rights of education and freedom. The Taliban prohibited Pakistani people from listening to music, watching television, women going for shopping, laughing and chatting and most importantly they banned education for girls. Malala bravely stood up for their rights. She started blogging, writing and speaking against Taliban’s inhuman activity.…

After the Taliban attacked her for advocating education for women in the Middle-East, Yousafzai proclaimed “weakness, fear and hopelessness die, strength, power and courage was born” (qtd. in theirworld.org) in her address to the United Nations Youth Assembly. This action is what has made Yousafzai such an icon and activist, for standing up for her truth and following her own path towards activism. She has even had more than three-million people sign the Malala Petition for education reform worldwide. In Malala Yousafzai’s case, what made her break social laws was the desire for change, the desire for an education, which is taboo in many Taliban-controlled areas due to the radical interpretation of Islam within the group. Many other female activists also existed in…

I am writing to apply for the chance to be a senior prefect. There are numerous reasons as to why I would be honoured for the chance to forfill the role. Firstly I feel that it is a position that comes with great responsibility which will be beneficial in the future for CVs and will appeal to employees and Universities. Also as I have been a member of Treorchy Comprehensive school for around six years I think that becoming a senior prefect will give me another opportunity to contribute to the school and take a more active role within the school community. Since my younger years at the school I have always looked up to the Sixth form students for support and guidance. I would like the chance myself, to help younger students as I feel I am approachable and caring. After recieving my GCSE results where I exceeded my target grades in a majority of subjects I realised that I wanted to become a senior prefect to give back to the school that has improved my learning incredibly.…
