“People talked about their days being numbered, but really, everything was numbered...twenty more shampooings. A hundred more showers. Fifty more sunrises. Every movie you watched was the last time you’d watch that movie, or the second or the third to the last. Every kiss was one closer to your last.” This demonstrates Eliza realizing and analyzing just how much time that she has left. All these seemingly mundane and daily things turn into another reminder of the asteroid and it’s looming devastation. Her thoughts explain that we all take these everyday actions for granted, and that we should realize that our time is precious, even the time spent shampooing hair or watching movies and sunrises.
Altogether, the theme for We All Looked Up by Tommy Wallach is that time is precious, and we should be thankful for the time we have. This theme is demonstrated through several situations throughout the book: Peter’s and Eliza’s thoughts about the news, and Eliza starting a blog about a world that knows they’re about to die. All of these examples from the book demonstrate the theme. Tommy Wallach’s story of survival and hope clearly displays the importance of appreciating the time you

A year ago, I bought a small, blue notebook for a dollar at target. It holds 82 pages, each about the size of my palm. Their paper is made from the same thin, gray material used in newspapers. On the cover of the book is a picture from the children’s story Oh, the Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel). In the image, the main character in the tale, a small man dressed entirely in yellow, laughs as he sails a hot air balloon across a cotton ball cloud sky. I’ve inscribed the places I hope to one day travel inside the notebook. Some, like Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni salt flats and the city of Bagan in Myanmar sound foreign to my ears. Other pages are occupied by more local attractions. They list places like Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona and the statue of liberty in New York. Although I can only dream of traveling across the globe, in the Martin Handford book series, Where’s Waldo?, the protagonist of the tales, Waldo, easily gallivants across time and space. If I possessed Waldo’s peripatetic powers, even for just one day, I would not waste the…
