After I read the book and watched the movie The Watsons Go to Birmingham, I noticed there were some obvious major differences between the two. Three of the major differences I noticed include the diner discussion with the white employees, the absence of the character Rufus, and their cousins talking about school integration. These differences played a major part in how the story was told.…
Another reason why I found this painting interesting were all the specific details that were portrayed. The scenery itself was breath taking however I loved how Church added the remains of a wrecked ship onto the painting to show the dangers these iceberg can cause. This also helped determine how big the iceberg is…
The painting depicts John Brown being escorted out of a building walking down a set of stairs to his execution. Behind him are a group of finely dressed white men following him out of the building. On each side of the stairs, there are two soldiers dressed in navy with weapons and a group of African Americans along with one young white girl on the right side observing the situation. John Brown is seen kissing an African American infant being held by the baby’s mother.…
This novel is based on Edgar J. Watson who lived until 1910 and farmed in the Everglades. In the novel, Watson and others tell their versions of events that involve Watson, forming their own versions of what Watson may or may not have done. Even though Watson was never brought to trial for Starr’s murder, he left Arkansas and set off for the Everglades, where he raised pigs and supported himself off the land. Even with all of the doubt in Arkansas, Watson seemed to fit in as a welcome member of the Everglades, and he settled in to begin farming in Chatham Bend. The Everglades was very different from life in Arkansas. There were hundreds of tiny islands, most of which were barely above water, and were uninhabitable. Watson was a man who boasts…
There are three men in the painting. The men are at ease and are almost lost in the painting. The men do not seem distinct from their surroundings but rather just another natural element in the bigger picture. The men are in poses that do not suggest positions that can be held for long periods of time, but rather only a moment. The men appear to be marveling at their surroundings as they look out into the vast wilderness. Above them, and hidden behind trees, there is a building. Just like the men, the nature and trees overwhelm the structure itself, clearly defining the more important and powerful of the two.…
Have you ever been swimming at the beach and thought that perhaps you had seen a shark? Sharks have become a common fear for most humans since the movie Jaws first appeared on the screen in 1975. Prior to that movie most people never gave a thought about sharks being a danger to humans. Actually we are more of a threat to them than they are to us. Some shark conservationists have pointed out that hundreds more people are killed every year in furniture related accidents than by sharks. Attacks on humans could be termed mistaken identity.…
This quote gives the reader a sense of impending doom. You know the shark is going to attack and kill the old man. The precise description of the shark makes it feel as if you are face to face with it. Also, the long paragraph makes it seem like the story is going in slow motion. Even so, the sentences don’t run on making the paragraph easy to read. The comparison between the shark and swordfish was well thought out. It is common knowledge that sword fishes are a blue-silver color, and look aerodynamic, much like a mako shark. Even though this essay was great overall, the sentence fluency was merely average. From what I read, his essay was a collection of sentences with similar length sentences. The sentence group,”The shark swung over and…
Basking shark by Norman MacCaig is a free verse poem, that might have been written to question the ‘evil’ natures of humans, using sharks metaphorical renaissance for the idea. The narrator introduces this un-intuitive question in line 13, quite bluntly by saying “ So who is the monster? The thought made me grow pale….” MacCaig uses figurative language, syntax, and diction to create this artwork.…

Albert Einstein once assured, “If I were to remain silent, I’d be guilty of complicity” Never remain silent, never become guilty of something you have never done. In effect, this shows how you have to stand up taller when knocked down. Become yourself and feel the power you can demand.…
The story opens with four men, the captain, the oiler, the correspondent, and the cook, stranded in the ocean in a small boat. Crane's descriptions in these opening scenes show right away the struggles the men face while trying to stay alive while the sea rips them apart. The men are in a desperate situation, but nature continues its ways regardless of what might happen to them. The sun continues to rise and set everyday. The shore is "lonely and indifferent." They are even regarded by a shark: "There was a long, loud swishing astern of the boat, and a gleaming trail of phosphorescence, like a blue flame, was furrowed on the black waters. It might have been made by a monstrous knife." (352 Crane) The men try every thing to get to shore but the waves keep pushing them out. This is however, just normal activity of nature, not any act of aggression against man.…
Stories are our essence of life. They grow and change with us. They allow us to reconstruct the past, and put our slant on things. They don’t’ have make sense, and they don’t all have to be fact. That’s what kind of story this is. Big Fish, directed by Tim Burton, is a heartwarming, comedic film, with many twists and turns. It explores the world of an eccentric father, while telling his life story. And so, our story begins.…
“It is the surgeon who saves a person’s life ….it is the nurse who helps…
Watson’s Theory of Human Caring has four main concepts: person, health, nursing, and environment. According to Cara (nd), the person is a being in the world. The person is distinctive of mind, body, and soul. The person should be viewed as a whole. According to Sitzman (2002), the concept of the person is elemental to wholistic nursing practice, addressing the patient with regard to mind, body, and soul. One way to look at is, the person is the patient…
The painting is of a slave ship that got caught up in a bad storm. A mass of dark clouds fill the sky with a fiery sunset in the middle. The water is troublesome announcing a Typhon is coming. For the slavers to save themselves and the ship; they start throwing overboard the dead and dying before the Typhon sweeps their decks. In those days the ship carrying the slaves kept them on the bottom of the ship chained up, and malnourished. By throwing the slaves overboard, is no lost to the slavers, because they could claim insurance money for lost item at sea. The sea is angry - filled with dead bodies of the salves still in chains. The sharks are happy food has arrived.…
