Water of Crystallization and Hydrated Mgso4
Tony Fernandez Elizabeth Nehme 05.05.11 Period 2 Hydrated Crystals Lab
Pre-Lab Questions Observations of hydrated MgSO4 | Shiny, clear, chunks of crystals, white | Mass of crucible and lid | 11.36 grams | Mass of crucible, lid, and hydrated MgSO4 | 14.38 grams | Mass of hydrated MgSO4 | 3.00 grams | Mass of crucible, lid, and anhydrous MgS04 | 12.82 grams | Mass of anhydrous MgSO4 | 1.45 grams | Mass of water in hydrated MgSO4 | 1.55 grams | Moles of anhydrous MgSO4 | 0.0120 moles | Moles of water in hydrated MgSO4 | 0.0860 moles | Observation of anhydrous MgSO4 | Different shade of white, more thicker and solid; powder-like |

3. To obtain the mass of water, first measure the mass of the crucible with the lid and anhydrous MgSO4 and then obtain the mass of the crucible with the lid once again and hydrated MgSO4; after that, subtract the two sums and the result is the mass of the water. To obtain the mass of the anhydrous MgSO4, measure the mass of the crucible lid, then subtract this measurement from the mass of the crucible, lid, and anhydrous MgSO4
4. To convert the mass of the anhydrous MgSO4 and water to moles, divide them by the molar mass.
5. To obtain the formula for the hydrate from the moles of anhydrous MgSO4 and the moles of water, obtain the ratio of moles of water to moles of the anhydrous product, MgSO4.
Analyze & Conclude 1. Approximately 7 moles (0.0860 moles H20/ 0.0120 moles MgSO4) 2. The observation of the hydrated MgSO4 was shiny, see-through, and chunky amounts of crystals. While the observation for the anhydrous MgSO4 came out to be a lighter, more different shade of white, unclear, and powder-like. 3. The method used in the experiment may not be suitable for determining the water of hydration for all hydrates because, when heating it up, some of the hydrates may be

By calculating the difference in the mass of the hydrate copper (II) sulfate and the anhydride we were able to determine the mass of water in the hydrate. This information was then used to determine the empirical formula of the hydrate, defined as a compound formed by the addition of water to another molecule. In the first trial, the mass of water in the hydrate was determined to be 0.41 g, while in the second trial the mass of water was 0.52 g. Moles of water associated with a single mole of anhydride were then calculated for both trials, giving the values of 4.7 and 4.5 moles of water, respectively. This indicated that the empirical formula of the hydrate might be copper (II) sulfate pentahydrate – CuSO4·5H2O.…

One is that when a hydrate is heated up, it will change colors indicating that there is a reaction occurring. Also, that the color change is a physical change since the anhydrous Copper (II) Sulfate could be hydrated again by adding water. When the water is added back to the compound, heat is released and it sizzles as it re-hydrates. Another thing I learned was that you could evaporate the water in a compound to make it an anhydrous compound. Lastly that the hydrate is chemically bound to the Copper (II) Sulfate, but it can be separated with…

First, we cleaned, dried and heated an evaporating dish for five minutes on an iron ring with the Bunsen burner and massed it. Then, we added 2 grams of an unknown hydrate and calculated the mass of that. Next, we used gradually increasing heat for six minutes to dehydrate the solution, and we allowed it to cool for five minutes. We then massed it after cooling. We also wrote detailed observations. After this, we used our data to calculate the percent water of the solution using the appropriate equation which can be seen in the calculations section. Finally, we did a second trial to check the consistency of our data and cleaned up the lab station.…
