During the colonial period, there were child marriages prevailed in India, and the widows were seen as untouchables in the society. Widows in that period was send to a rescue home, where they had to lead a life by worshipping God and without any interaction with the world outside. As a beginning of this film, a myth is told by the Nyinba people of Nepal: a story of fearsome spirits thought to kill children and the weak. Their crime was adulterous passionate love and it was this that had condemned them to live eternally between life and death. In this film, we learn about and explore marriages in tribal societies. We can clearly identify the differences that challenge both side’s ideas and sensibilities about marriage bonds.…

Under the direction of the little-known Japanese filmmaker, Naomi Kawase ( also credited as screenwriter, producer and editor), “Still the Water” moves using a languid pace and embraces a strange intimacy. Set on one of the limestone islands of the Amani archipelago, it tells the story of a quiet 16-year-old kid, Kaito (Nijiro Murakami), who’s not happy with his mother, disapproving her behavior since his father left home a few years before. It’s not that she’s not gentle or cares about him, but because the most of her time is spent with lovers and not much is left to her son, who often wanders alone or hangs out with his best friend, Kyoko (Jun Yoshinaga). The film’s opening scene leads us to foresee a mysterious tale that never actually happens.…

I think it is safe to say that at least once in a person’s life, they have watched a film that has been directed outside of the United States. However, these three films that I will be talking about in this essay are not just ordinary films. Each of these films represent a story that has greatly affected a nation. The movies are Yesterday, Stoning of Soraya M, and Raise the Red Lantern. All three films listed were written because their director wanted the world to know about the problems that exist in their nations. For example, Yesterday was written to inform audiences of the AIDS crisis in Africa, Stoning of Soraya M was written to inform us of the cruel punishment and the injustices of women in the justice system in Iran, while Raise the…

This film can also be used to highlight the troubles of a children who have experienced a high stress life event, differences in relationship between parent and sibling, the effects of peer acceptance or unacceptance, and community effects on children. While also being a nice heartwarming story of a family sticking together and finding new place and…

This woman had opened up an orphanage which has over one hundred children. Most of these children are orphans due to a AIDS epidemic that took the lives of their parents. After Kenya, they traveled to their destination of Northern Uganda. The infrastructure and faces seen on the documentary are ones to not be forgotten. This film communicates non-verbally to viewers in many ways. The scenes of the children who are so skinny from lack of food that they look like bones and a pot belly is disheartening. This captures the heart in a very sad and weak moment.…
