Water Contamination Report
In this lab we tested the purity of water by looking for the chemicals free chlorine, chloride, sulfate, nitrate, copper, total hardness, iron, hydrogen sulfide, lead, pesticides, pH, total alkalinity, and total chlorine inside a water sample. The chemicals that produced a 0.0 result meant that there was no trace of that chemical inside the sample. The chemicals not found were copper, hydrogen sulfide, free chlorine, lead, iron, pesticide, and total chlorine. As a class we found the results of the other chemicals that were present in the water and there were two trials per test. The results for sulfate was 125 mg/L and 0.0 mg/L inside the sample, 0.0 mg/L and 0.2 mg/L of nitrite, 125 mg/L and 250 mg/L of chloride, 2.0 mg/L for both trials of nitrate and 0.0 for the trials of total chlorine. The total hardness of the water was 250, and the total alkalinity was 5.00. The average pH in our class was 8.5. The chemicals found in the sample can be hazardous when they exceed the mandatory MCL or secondary MCL mandated by the EPA. The SMCL of sulfate is 250 mg/L. Ingesting high levels of sulfate causes health hazards like diarrhea. Water that has 1 mg/L of nitrite can be very detrimental to infants under six months old and cause blue baby syndrome. Nitrate has the same hazards of nitrite but the MCL is 10 mg/L. The SMCL of chloride is 250 mg/L. There are no health effects in ingesting water with chloride although it does give a salty taste that is undesirable. Water that contains chloride should be checked for sodium because sodium can cause health effects. The MCL of total chlorine is 4.0 mg/L and it can cause stomach discomfort along with nose and eye irritation. The EPA Secondary Drinking Water regulation of alkalinity is 500 ppm. High amounts of alkalinity in water can cause drying of skin. The average pH of drinking water is 8.5, when it is greater than 8.5 it means the water is hard. Water hardness is caused by compounds like calcium and magnesium, and there

Abstract. The “hardness” of water is a common dilemma attributed by high concentrations of metals such as calcium and magnesium. This is a result of the properties of water; because it is a good solvent, impurities are easily dissolved. As water moves through soil and rock, it dissolves minute amounts of minerals and holds them in solution. Although it is not hazardous to health, hard water is a nuisance to both industrial and domestic water consumers. Mineral buildup on plumbing fixtures, poor soap and detergent performance, and a contribution…

A wise man once said , “ It is impossible to defeat an ignorant man in an argument”. According to the article, “ How Tap Water Became Toxic in flint, Michigan “ , by Sara Ganim and Linh Tran they discuss the problem with residents from Michigan unable to obtain clean fresh water. It has left the majority of residents furious and left many with unanswered questions. Such as, when will they have healthy safe water and when will they receive clean water for the money they are paying for? However, while the mayor is ignoring the problem the residents who reside in Michigan are being affected with having health issues.…

Grab a 40 mL beaker and fill the normal water in the beaker to 40 mL and grab a pH tape then put it into the water. Take the pH paper out of the water and match it to the best similar color and record the data, the pH of normal water is 7. Next is to test the conductivity of the water, grab the conductivity probe by putting into the water and hit the green arrow. Let the probe be in the water for 30 seconds, so when it is at 30 seconds hit the red square to stop it and record the data. The conductivity of normal water is 503, the next step is testing the turbidity of the water. To test the turbidity you would use the colorimeter by pouring the water into a the clear square container and close it, it should have like 3/4s of the container of the water. And you would record the data that the labquest says, the turbidity of normal water is 0. You would do those same steps for the dirty water before the filter and record the data, the data shows the pH to be 5, the conductivity to be 4280, and the turbidity to be .70. Finally you will be able to start your filter, grab the beaker with the dirty water and put it through your filter. After that you want to do those some steps to the water that comes through your filter and record the data, the pH is 7, the conductivity of the water is 1,223.3, and the turbidity is .024. The result changed the pH back to normal water, but not the…

Due to its specific location, Huntington Beach can have many possible sources of contamination, including the offshore sewage, urban runoff, and bird feces from the Talbert Coastal Marsh (Choi et al., 2003). Huntington Beach is located in the heavily urbanized Santa Ana watershed and there are some factors that are behind the importance when considering BMPs for this area. In arid regions, such as Southern California, stormwater in particular effects coastal water quality because a large percentage of the water runoff and pollution flows into the ocean in just a few storms in the winter (Ho Ahn et al., 2005). Many urbanized watersheds, Santa Ana included, have a stormwater flow that is controlled by municipal infrastructure that is used to minimize flood potential and maximize water reclamation. This, then, results in the discharge into coastal waters for days even after a rain event, causing a potential for human exposure to pathogens in beaches (Ho Ahn et al. 2005).…

Background: According to the Millennium Development Goals Report 2012, 783 million people, or 11 per cent of the global population, remain without access to an improved source of drinking water. Also the United Nations has long been addressing the global crisis caused by insufficient water supply to satisfy basic human needs and growing demands on the world’s water resources to meet human, commercial and agricultural needs (un.org). In this experiment water quality and contamination of groundwater was investigated. First, I observed the effects that many pollutants have on groundwater. I predict that in this experiment the oil and vinegar will create the large amount of contamination in the water, while the laundry detergent will just create an aroma smell to it. Considering the smells and color to these ingredients I think that it will cause the water quality to have a bad smell and cause the water to be very cloudy. Once filtering the contaminated water, the water will be clear and purified. Second, I will experiment water treatment and filtering. I predict that once the contaminated water is treated and filtered that it will leave me with less contamination or none at all. Then for the last experiment, I will determine the difference between bottled water and tap water to discover any contamination. I predict that the tap water will be the most contaminated and with the most chemicals in it, while the bottled waters; Dasani and Fiji will be completely filtered and free of any chemicals.…

Chlorination is the process of making drinking water suitable for consumption. Chlorinated drinking water is important in obtaining sanitary drinking water. Because water is a beneficial part of life, it is important to evaluate both the benefits and risk of having chlorine in drinking water. The EPA regulates the amount of chlorine in water with an acceptable daily intake of 4 parts per million or 4 mg/L. Epidemiologists have linked an association of cancer to chlorinated drinking water. These hypotheses were tested in both rats, mice, and other rodents and in humans. Many scientist notes in rats, high concentration of chlorinated drinking water corresponded with DNA and chromosomal alterations resulting in tumor formation. In humans, acute…

    1. I'm seated, with my mother, on a palace veranda, cooled by a breeze from the royal garden. Before us, on a dais, is an empty throne, its arms and legs embossed with polished brass, the back and seat covered in black-and-gold silk. In front of the steps to the dais, there are two columns of people, mostly men, facing one another, seated on carved wooden stools, the cloths they wear wrapped around their chests, leaving their shoulders bare. There is a quiet buzz of conversation. Outside in the garden, peacocks screech. At last, the blowing of a ram's horn announces the arrival of the king of Asante, its tones sounding his honorific, kotokohene, "porcupine chief." (Each quill of the porcupine, according to custom, signifies a warrior ready to kill and to die for the kingdom.) Everyone stands until the king has settled on the throne. Then, when we sit, a chorus sings songs in praise of him, which are interspersed with the playing of a flute. It is a Wednesday festival day in Kumasi, the town in Ghana where I grew up. Unless you're one of a few million Ghanaians, this will probably seem a relatively unfamiliar world, perhaps even an exotic one. You might suppose that this Wednesday festival belongs quaintly to an African past. But before the king arrived, people were taking calls on cellphones, and among those passing the time in quiet conversation were a dozen men in suits, representatives of an insurance company. And the meetings in the office next to the veranda are about contemporary issues: H.I.V./AIDS, the educational needs of 21st-century children, the teaching of science and technology at the local university. When my turn comes to be formally presented, the king asks me about Princeton, where I teach. I ask him when he'll next be in the States. In a few weeks, he says cheerfully. He's got a meeting with the head of…
