Was Thomas Jefferson Really A Mistress?
The term mistress is used when long-term female lover and companion who is not married to her partner, and the partner is married to someone else. However, I was surprised to learn that Thomas Jefferson had a personal slave for his pleasure. according many historians his wife had passed away when he made Sally Hemings his “mistress”. The term mistress does not apply in this case because she was not in love with her owner and this was not an affair, she was just raped whenever. However, in the past she would have been considered a mistress, because she was not married to Thomas Jefferson and their “romance” was a secret to the public. And whenever someone has a mistress one keeps the relationship a secret, because it was prohibited to have a relationship with a slave. She would still be a mistress because she had a long term relationship with him and had four kids. …show more content…
The fact is no one knew if Thomas Jefferson had forced her to be his lover. Who know maybe Sally Hemings became his lover to have a better life for her and her kids. Unless, Thomas Jefferson used her as a sex slave and raped her whenever, then she shouldn’t be called a mistress. I believe that since she was freed and her kids went on to have a free life, she was the mistress of Thomas Jefferson. If there was no romance then she would of been a slave for rest of her life even after Jefferson’s death. Since, there is no clear evidence that states she was forced then it would be proper to use the word

Jefferson treated his slaves in a harsh manner. For instance, he “‘had [James Hubbard, a captured runaway slave,] severely flogged in the presence of his old companions’”(Takaki 56). Conspiracy theories have been around for many years. The earliest one that I can find in politics was after the Tea Act of 1773. Thomas Jefferson stated that King George was sending armies to kill and oppress the American people. I believe this helped him to gain support in seceding from Great Britain. The second, also involving Jefferson, but was meant to keep him from being elected as president. Jefferson’s opposition claimed that he was part of a secret society, called the Illuminati, and that he was going to destroy the country with terror and tyranny. They also claimed that he was anti-religion. Another conspiracy was when a group, called the Freemasons or Masons, was thought to be behind Aaron Burr wanting to start an independent…

Also, in Clotel; or, The President's Daughter: A Narrative of Slave Life in the United States (1853), the first African American novel, Brown relates the story of Thomas Jefferson's relationship with his slave mistress Sally Hemings (1773–1835). Originally published in England, the novel eventually came to U.S. readers, but only after it had been significantly revised, with references to the president removed. Much like the evolution of Douglass's anti-slavery agenda, Brown began his career as a pacifist who boycotted political abolitionism in the 1840s, but his writings over the course of the following decade reflect his growing militancy and preference for political activism to end slavery.…
