Was the First World War the most important event in the 21 century?

During the last century there has been many major worldwide conflicts involving different countries from all regions. All of them have played a significant role and led somehow into our modern world. However, it is the First World War what has really been the most significant event in the past one hundred years and caused a greater change in our modern society. Firstly, up to now, it is still remembered as one of the world’s most tragic, bloody, and devastating events in world history. It has never been forgotten all around the world especially in the countries which took an active role in it. In the “Commonwealth countries” it is called “remembrance day (also known as Poppy Day or Armistice Day)” and it is a “memorial day […] to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty”, proving the massive importance given this war which changed history. Secondly, it is also war marked by its record bloodshed. For first time in known history “military and civilian casualties [were] over 37 million”. Germany lost “a million lives” and around “750,000 men from the UK were killed”, with such massacres as the “Battle of Somme” in which “British casualties on that day alone amounted 60,000”, leaving a devastated world. It is also known the vast amount of countries which took part in WW1. In total, “over twenty-seven countries” were involved in either side. Some, as the powerful U.S. had to spend “more than $30 billion” on war which meant an incredible effort for its economy, whilst other countries such as Germany found themselves with an impossible debt to pay. Also, it was also a war for innovations. We saw for first time the “landship” in battle which was “codenamed tank”, and approximately “30 different poisonous gases were used” in WW1, making it the most important event in warfare development.
