Was The Emancipation Proclamation A Turning Point
The first turning point was politically, ended up being the emancipation proclamation and was done mainly by Abraham Lincoln. He was under pressure by the Republicans since the war was going on so long and slavery had became the big issue. The Battle of Antietam came along and Lincoln thought since the North had so many victories it was time for the Emancipation Proclamation “The Emancipation Proclamation declared that all slaves in areas rebelling against the United States were free, and that slavery was abolished in those states. In the slave states that had sided with the Union, slavery would continue.” The Emancipation Proclamation was a big point in slavery, but wasnt too successful because it only applied to slaves in areas not controlled

    There were many turning points during the Progressive Era and the Great Depression. The two major turning points that stood out to me were the Women’s Right Movement and the Stock Market Crash of 1929. Women played a played a major role in reforming the nation. Late in the nineteenth century women were well educated college graduates and worked outside of the home. Women no longer followed the traditional social norms. Militant political action started in Britain in 1903 with the formation of the Women 's Social and Political Union (WSPU) for the right to vote. Women of all ages and classes demonstrated for the right to vote. They were jailed; locked out of their meeting places; and thrown down the steps of Parliament. After coming to a truce women in Britain were granted the right to vote in 1918. In the United States women participated in reform organizations as a way to perform public services and have a job. The first reform organization that women participated in was the fight for black civil rights. Between 1890 and 1913 two groups were founded to highlight women’s suffrage and to push for reforms including allowing women to vote. With the determination of the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) and the National Women’s Party (MWP) women, Susan B. Anthony wrote and submitted a proposed right-to-vote amendment to the Constitution. Women achieved the right to vote in 1920 when the Nineteenth Amendment was passed. The second major turning point was the Stock Market Crash of 1929 known as “Black Tuesday.” There were a series of events that caused the Great Depression, but the Stock Market Crash was one that really caught my attention.     The constitutional aspects of the advancements that took place were very crucial in this time period. One of these was the South Carolina Declaration of Secession, which was introduced in December of 1860 right before the Civil War began. In this document the government of South Carolina provides its reasons for it seceding from the United States, such as the North’s disregard for the Constitutional rule supporting slavery, and this was a big step for the formation of the Confederacy (Doc. A). Another major political move was when African Americans petitioned the Union convention of Tennessee that if they were forced into military duty they should also be allowed to vote (Doc C). This was a very bold move for blacks in America because it was an attempt for a higher authority to take notice of racial suffrage issues. Later on at the very end of the Civil War Lincoln’s Secretary, Gideon Welles, wrote a diary entry that he feels that the Federal government should have no control over the matter of suffrage in any states and that getting rid of slavery should be done constitutionally but spoke nothing of the matter of civil rights for blacks (Doc.
