Needing and Wanting Are Different Jimmy Carrasquillo

In Jimmy Carrasquillo’s essay, “Needing and Wanting Are Different,” the author emphasizes how his life was influenced by his priorities, particularly when he has to manage with his personal finances. Also, he mentions how during his adolescent years he has to find a job because he wants to be independent and earn his own money. He, as well talks about the demands that he has in his life and how he learned what is valuable and worthy to stand for. However, his school, work, and sport practices suffer because he does not have the time to prepare for them. At the end of the essay, Jimmy Carrasquillo summarizes how his experience has been helpful because he learned how to overcome the circumstances from the past and restrict himself to spend money on his needs. I agree with Jimmy Carrasquillo and his choice to find a job and become more independent, mature and responsible for his own actions. In fact, he has to deal with a lot more on his shoulders now than simply going to school and playing sports. He has to learn how to manage his time properly and to explore a different stage of his life.
Same story impact my life, when I had to move from my country to the United States two years ago. I had to face the reality of working, studying and becoming a man. I thought it was easy, which obviously, was not. However, I knew it will be difficult with the language, but at the same time was a good way to improve it and also, getting to know new people and learning the culture. Despite that, I was motivated to open a new page of my life. Recently, I had learned what it means to work and to be on time, both of which I had struggled with at school. Quickly, my habits had gone and I saw life differently. My first job I started was in a church. Every Sunday I had to open the church in the morning from six-thirty and to make the coffee.

It is an awakening, a revival, and the beginning of a wondrous journey. This was my first day in United States, I felt lonesome and desolate, these emotions were just like a monster that destroyed all my positive thoughts. Language and culture differences made me nervous and frustrated, and also hindered me from being able to integrate into the new environment. I was reticent and apathetic when I first entered school and since I don’t talked a lot, only a few classmates wanted to be close to me. I wanted to have more friends, but I didn’t know what to do so I waited for people to come to me. Apparently later, nobody came up and made friend with me. I realized that waiting was not helpful, stepping up and talking to people could eventually benefited me more than any other things. So I started to open myself to people around me and be affable, communicative, and helpful to them. Gradually, my personality became more outgoing and enthusiastic, some people liked to talk to me and some even wanted to share their ideas, opinions to me. My life is becoming interesting and exciting, everyday I get to know various people and enrich myself by learning from them. My experience of language and culture was just as my social life where I afraid to talk and ask. It was unacquainted in the first time when I asked question to a person in the street. But several times of trying and practicing helped me to be more accessible…

    Essay On Chris Mccandless

Throughout life we are taught that achievement and success is essential to our happiness. Most Americans presume that achievement and success is presenting scholarliness and attaining good jobs; Many Americans are very focused on their careers. It seems to me that many Americans tend to be very focused on their careers for the same outcome, money. The value of money is very emphasized in the American culture, which is why we tend to be focused on our jobs and careers. However, Chris McCandless did not see money as a valuable possession. In fact, before going on his fatal journey to Alaska, he donated his entire college fund to a charity called OXFAM America, which was a charity dedicated to fighting hunger (Krakauer, 20). Ironically, Chris’s cause of death came from starvation. Chris’s willingness to give away his entire college fund before his journey exemplifies the differences in what he values vs. what Americans value. Chris values happiness also, however his happiness was not reliant on money, his happiness was reliant on the feeling of independence, which is also something American’s value. Chris’s urge to feel independent just happened to be more extreme than…

Many have experienced the miserable dilemma that two conflicting desires can create. The eighteenth-century British novelist Laurence Stern once wrote, “Nobody, but he who has felt it, can conceive what a plaguing thing it is to have a man’s mind torn asunder by two projects of equal strength, both obstinately pulling in a contrary direction at the same time” in concurrence to this forlorn issue. Whether it is because of two compelling needs, aspirations, responsibilities, or influences, the means by which the person resolves this predicament speaks a great deal about his or her character. In the short novel Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton, the protagonist is faced with such a decision. Constricted by poverty, geographical isolation, and the confines of society, the end results of his perilous decision will alter his life perpetually.…

Dr. Montessori’s educational aims are to help the development of the child; and to help him adapt himself to (a) the physical conditions of his environment; (b) to the social requirements dictated by the way of life of the group of people among whom he lived – the society. For adaptation thus considered stability plays a great role because it represents the basis from which to start from towards the realization of the individual’s aspiration. Some of the fundamental and unchanging facts that may help us in our task of educating concern “the child” himself. Therefore, it is important that we study his needs, functions and his possible tendency to further understand the child, identify the manner of assistance we can give them and to fulfil the aim of giving these children the picture of mankind in the world. These basic aspects of man are invariable no matter what situation is. No matter what the ideologies of the moment, certain facts remain constant. He may be normal or with disability but his basic needs remains the same.…

Every person has its ups and downs in life. These big changes create either positive or negative turning-points in people’s life. The biggest change I experienced in my life was when I started to work. I had an enormous will to achieve something in life but hadn’t the opportunity to do it before. Knowing you can move mountains but not having a chance to get in action hurts a person extremely. So, with a little delay and with the support of my husband, I accepted the offer of my friends, which I didn’t wanted to lose. Now, when I look back and take my social life, my ability to use the computer, and my self- confidence into consideration, I’m definitely sure I did the right thing with starting to work.…
