Philip Malloy is a track-obsessed ninth grader at Harrison High School in Harrison, New Hampshire. He has an English teacher, Margaret Narwin, and is doing very poorly in her class; he is given a D for his grade and is not allowed to try out for the track team. He does not tell this to his parents, and instead pretends that he no longer has an interest in trying out for the track team. Philip causes many distractions in Narwin 's class such as humming the national anthem. Eventually he is suspended from school by Dr. Joseph Palleni, the school 's vice principal.…

My name is Adia Radecka and I am a junior at Walter Payton College Prep. H.S. in Chicago. I will be visiting Stanford this Friday and would like to observe a class. Would it be possible to sit in on a class this Friday? I am interested in the school of engineering, humanities, and science, and law, it would be wonderful if I could observe a class in one of those schools. Thank you for your time and have a wonderful day!…
In his article, “Famine, Affluence and Morality”, philosopher Peter Singer observes that that there are millions of people around the world who are leading misery lives and suffering death, because of famine , war, lack of shelter, and adequate medical care. He states that although rich nations have contributed great sums of money for these causes, they are still not giving enough in comparison to their Gross National Product (GNP). He points out that many nations only contributes about one percent of their GNP.…
As the threat of invasion from the Spanish Armada still hung, Queen Elizabeth I attempted to rally her troops in the town of Tilbury. The Queen dispelled opposition of her position and worries about her lack of capabilities as she delivered her Tilbury Speech on August 9th, 1588. Through her use of diction, imagery, and sentence structure the Queen successfully rallies her troops to confront the encroaching enemy.…
The ticker tape and the confetti are raining down upon you and the countless other Americans who are celebrating the end of the second World War. As you look around Times Square in New York, you see the Uncle Sam poster that help draft many of the brave soldiers who fought. You also see the Rosie the Riveter poster that inspired so many women to go and work. You then turn and see a navy soldier kissing a nurse. You remember hearing about Old…
In the words of Dinesh D’Souza during a speech he delivered to the students and faculty of Liberty University’s Convocation: “…America is a country where you can be in the driver's seat of your own life in which your destiny is not given to you; it is constructed by you.” I agree with Mr. D’Souza wholeheartedly. For centuries, America has developed a reputation for being a place of refuge. America has become a sort of Haven, or a dream come true, for many. In no other part of the world can you receive the same level of freedom in all aspects of life than you can in America. This infamous “New World” offers the opportunity for a fresh start, religious freedom, and the opportunity to obtain wealth.…
Over the United State’s history many groups of minorities have fought for freedom from oppression, however, the most acknowledged protests are peaceful. Cesar Chavez, in his magazine article, underscores the dire need for nonviolence that is able to effectively end oppression and prevent physical suffering by referencing other leaders of successful protests and implementing an empowering tone.…
Colin Powell life is interesting because he was the first African-American Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff. The commencement speech Powell gives at Howard University show his willingness and determination to overcome challenges. Not letting his race put a limitations on what he could or couldn’t do, shows that anyone can do anything and be anyone in this nation. It also shows how times have changed from the past from African Americans being slaves to running president and doing great things. Powell speech showed me in an encouraging way that you don’t have to be big or popular to do great things.…
"The completedness of a speech relies on the contribution of the parts to the whole"…
Robert Gray most definitely provokes thought and stirs emotion through an effective use of language and techniques used in his poems. One of his major messages are those connected with mans effect on the environment and our constant need to create something new and yet, forget about what we already have and where that ends up. Also the sense of our society almost becoming, un-Australian and very international.…
Main Point 1: His bravery as an individual, transcended into the millions who were under the British Empire…
Bravery, Courage, War, Victory, Strength…. The little guy. The underdog. These concepts are all key to the Australian experience. These are only some of the values that define Australians. After the war, poets like Banjo Patterson, were trying to lift peoples spirts, as one of the best ways to excape from reality is through litreture. This was one of the best times for Australian poets as people wanted a way out, some ulternate universe where everything ends in a happily ever after. One of the later poets, Bruce Dawe saw this and reflected this in his poems, Life-cycle and homosuburbiences. He did this by portraying a man in homosuburbiences, who retreats to his garden, taking all his worries with him. ‘One constant in a world of variables’, Dawe writes. There are many reasons for a man to retreat to his ‘garden’ one of these reasons is because the world is changing to fast, as it did when the war took place. This is also showen in Life-cycle as Dawe writes, ‘They will not grow old as those from more northern States grow old, for them it will always be three- quarter-time with the scores level and the wind advantage in the final term’. By this I beleve he is refereing to the whole ‘if you support this team you will not grow old, in other words sport is just another way to cheat death.…
Extreme global poverty is a problem that affects a large percentage of the world's population and will continue to spread until serious action is taken against it by the wealthier nations. However, the amount of obligation, if any, that countries feel they have to deal with such a problem is a main source of controversy and one of the reasons why poverty is taking so long to be reduced.…
Being a woman myself, "...the struggle of women to mould their own destiny and to influence the fate of our global village"- as Aung San Suu Kyi explicitly describes it- is something I am very passionate about. I know to be true that we are incredibly lucky to have been around in the present time, in regards to objectively and retrospectively understanding the principles of Women and the change that has, and I am happy to report, will continue to take place. The empowering speech given by Suu Kyi, along with Margaret Atwood's light and entertaining take on the place of women, although both delivered over a decade ago, resonate with my personal beliefs and inspire me to appreciate in completely different contexts, my most natural state- womanhood.…
