Walter Lee Younger In Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin In The Sun

The character that I choose for “Raisin in the Sun” is Walter Lee Younger. The play shows that Walter Lee Younger is a black African American male that is depending on a $10,000 life insurance check to get him and his family out of their struggles. Walter Younger can be really hard to get along with. He picks fights with his sister, Beneatha. He says all kinds of mean and hurtful things to Ruth, his wife, and is even short with his mother, Lena. I will be analyzing who Walter Lee is, what he want, describing his personality, and what would be a good metaphor for my character.
Walter plays the role of the husband of Ruth, father of Travis, and brother of Beneatha, and son of Lena Younger also known as mama. Walter wants to rise above his class status to gain dignity, respect, and pride. He is a good father but then again he’s not because he doesn’t know how to treat his family. At the current rate, he feels all he has to give Travis are stories about the white life and how things are better
He is also passionate, ambitious, and bursting with the energy of his dream. As he saw everything all starting to slip away, he exploded at mama for taking away his chance at a future filled with possibility and money. Now that Walter friend took his money and ran off with it, Walter is desperate. He sinks to a new low and calls Mr.Lindner.
My metaphor for Walter would be insurance money. The insurance money arrival instigates happiness and anger, which is also the means by which Hansberry is able to indicate betrayal when Willy Harris steals Walter and Beneatha’s share. The reference to the insurance money is used to illustrate how little the Younger family has and they also demonstrate how money is when one has very little. The check represents the effects of poverty and the play is interpreted as if money is the only way they can escape the prejudices they
