Walt Whitman Beliefs
Walt Whitman is a very crucial person when it comes to American Poetry. He is the father of American poetry.Walt Whitman is a man of America and is very loyal and respectful to his country that he holds close to his heart. Whitman has inspired many American poets up until this day and he still lives on because of his poetry. Walt Whitman was a patriotic man as seen in “I Hear America Singing,” “O Captain! My Captain!,” and “Cavalry Crossing a Ford.” Whitman shows that he is patriotic by saluting and thanking every American worker that helps to make our country better. A clear example is when a critic stated, “American workers are Whitman’s everyday heros” (Semansky 249). When Whitman puts these powerful metaphors in his work it shows how much he really cares about America and everyone who helps to make it better and how he uses his poetry as a tribute to America as a whole. A huge part of being an American is having freedom and singing can be meant to represent freedom because people can sing what they want and have the right to express themselves. Another quote that supports this is “Their pride in what they do is obvious; they embody the American myth of freedom” ( Semansky 249). In this critic quote Semansky expresses that this poem shows the freedom Americans have and the pride that comes with it. Whitman shows how the people embodied their freedom by singing and showing confidence and pride. The quote also shows that freedom is not a myth in America it is a privilege that every American embraces.
