In addition, some kids begin to detach from school and peers, and eventually can suffer from depression. In most situations, these kids have no ambition to do well in school. They live in an environment where shootings, stabbings, and drugs are part of their everyday norm. They do not have much positive influences to help motivate them to excel in their education. After watching this video, I believe that it is an accurate statement that the American gang problem is similar to what veterans experience in war.…

In an article comprised of many different sources called “The Cycle of Violence: Intergenerational Violence,” Lila Stansup discusses how cycles of violence are created. In her article she quotes Fagan who said, “Various types of violence…even witnessing violence: may influence the growing child, to believe that that violence is normal (Stansup 2007). This just goes to show that when introduced to violence it is easier for children to accept and engage in violent acts of their own. This also makes gangs seem normal and more appealing to the youth especially when it is all they have ever known and seen. The movie talks about how when someone is paying for your meals and taking you under their wing you basically have to do whatever they ask of you. Often times what older gang members would ask of you was to do something that members of the gang would commit. Children are almost pushed into these violent acts because they have no other choice. If they were to say no then they may risk the food that is put on their table or the roof they live under. So not only witnessing these acts of violence but engaging in the violent acts themselves even if they had no desire to forces the youth into a cycle that has been extremely hard to break away from. This phenomenon is further discussed in an online source called “Why Do Youth Join Gangs?” compiled by Shay Bilchik. Bilchik quoted many other people in his piece such as Johnstone and Moore. “In some communities, youth are intensively recruited or coerced into gangs (Johnstone, 1983). They seemingly have no choice. A few are virtually born into gangs as a result of neighborhood traditions and their parents ' earlier gang participation or involvement in criminal activity” (Moore, 1978). This goes to show that what Peralta discussed in his movie is…

Violent acts, and distrust between gangs within the community are clear in the storyline and portrayed. A few negative examples and consequences from the gangs include: violence, fear, isolation, and retaliation. One such time was when Ponyboy was “jumped” returning home from the movies. The Socs pulled a knife on him, threatened to cut his throat and his “pride” by cutting his hair. This act of terror fueled the hate and violence, creating a…

A man named Bill Lee had graduated college with honors and was able to leave the gang life. He lived in California his whole life, however it was not always a smooth road to travel down. Bill Lee’s story begins with: “I was just eight years old when I got into the gang life. It was around the time I witnessed my first shooting, which occurred during a rumble between Chinese and black gangs….basically grew up living a double life (Lee, 2015).” Bill states that “The streets were unsafe and unpredictable, but it still served as a sanctuary; essentially, the lesser of two evils (Lee, 2015).” Bill was engaged in the most violent Asian gang which took place in San Francisco Chinatown. He goes on to explain how he began his gang career by starting out in low-level gangs; Bill would steal, gamble and bully other kids. “I learned early on that in the streets, it was dog-eat-dog and survival of the fittest (Lee, 2015).”Bill writes how he had escaped the gang life for years, however it would eventually be inevitable because his friends were continually joining. “We recruited kids beginning in middle school, offering quick cash, guns, cars, girls, money, muscle; essentially, a (false) sense of empowerment. Many guys were bullied and turned to gangs for protection and revenge (Lee, 2015).”Bill’s story ends with his words: “Physically, I may have left the gang, but the gangster was still inside of me.…

In order to help solve the problem of gang violence, the interrupters just need to keep up what they are doing and get more people to help them. It is a very good idea that the interrupters have all once been involved in gang violence or something of the sort. Then, the people that they are trying to help can relate to them instead of thinking they are just some sort of authority figure trying to tell them what to do. it is a lot easier for the people in gangs to relate to someone who once was also in a gang. The interrupters can talk to the people about how they were once in gangs and how much their life has turned around since realizing that that was not a good lifestyle to live. In the movie, every person that the interrupters had worked with ended up realizing…

There are many different reasons as to why a young person may join a gang that lives in the inner city, however for this paper, only a few will be discussed. One reason that a young person may join a gang is peer pressure from other teenagers and the need to fit in. A young person growing up in a family that has gang members in it is another reason for a young person to join a gang. “One way to know about gangs is to know gang members, to live with gang members, to see gang members on neighborhood streets” (Cadwallader 2002). If a young person is exposed to gangs then the chances are good that they will join that gang so that they fit in or to make their family members…

Today, Antonio and Bassanio borrowed money from me, three thousand ducats. The merchant Antonio is so certain that his ships will come back. It’s like nothing will come on his ships way, ships are just boards and sailors are just men. Anything could come on his ships way like thieves, storms, winds and rocks. After a long debate with myself I decided that I’ll lend them money. The merchant, Antonio and I decided to make a bond just for fun. He thinks proud and high that I will not charge interest, how proud he is. The bond state, I can take pound of flesh from any part of his body. Also the bond was sealed today with his blood. It is like father Abraham laid mercy on me by giving this chance, a chance to make revenge on Christians and Antonio. Oh, the name Antonio angers me , he the one who called me a dog, spat on me in the Rialto and called me unbeliever and his reasons is that I am Jew. When the day comes in three months from now and he can’t pay the three thousand ducats. I will say to him look to your bond!!! I will not give mercy for him. In the other hand maybe if I do lay mercy on him and , if all ships does not come back in three months and thus Bassanio won Portia’s hand in marriage , I can get the money that they owe thrice as much. Also, if neither that happens I can make them my slaves for life because I’m see as a fiend or a devil. He hates me because I am Jew and I lend money with interest. What I his problem with us Jew, we are human like them. In an instance if you poison a Jew and a Christian both of them will die. What else then he expect me to do if I don’t lend money; Jews are only entitled as professional bankers. We can’t own land, we could not seek for any other jobs and we are mistreated and their reason is that we are a Jew. Is it because we can’t accept their god and entitle him like another prophet or is it because a Jew killed Jesus who is also a Jew? O father Abraham helped me have peace…
