Wal-Mart Argumentative Analysis
Opinions regarding the prospective benefits and drawbacks of Wal-Mart have been shared for years. When Robert Reich published his essay, “Don’t Blame Wal-Mart”, in 2005 he tried to change the conversation from the corporation to the consumer. In order to achieve a successful essay, it is vital for a writer to successfully incorporate various criteria such as organization, tone, evidence, logos, pathos, and more. Utilizing these criteria will assist a writer in constructing a powerful essay that conveys an argument which the reader can understand and support. Reich’s essay is effective because of the tone and pathos utilized in his article; however, he doesn’t sufficiently back his claims which prevents this essay from becoming a complete success.

    Karen Olsson believes that Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer company, under pays their employees for the amount of work they do daily. They do not offer good working conditions for their employees or enough medical benefits to support themselves and their families. Sebastian Mallaby says that Wal-Mart is not wrong for the way that they run their business; he feels as though Wal-Mart does their consumers a favor by keeping the wages low and offering “low prices” (620). It’s just business! They have to do what it takes to remain the world’s top retailer and continue to, “enrich shareholders, and put rivals out of business” (620).
