Wabash County Jail Analysis
Jails are different in many ways, but when it comes to comparing the Miami County Jail to the Wabash County Jail, it looks like the Taj Mahal compared to a motor home. The two jails obtain very different security measures. In addition to the Miami County Jail it's more hands off rather than the Wabash County Jail where it’s more hands on. The recreation areas are also very different, being the Miami County Jail has two recreation rooms and Wabash County Jail only has one.
The hands on & off policy of the two jails are different in many ways, between the Miami County Jail and the Wabash County Jail. In the Wabash County Jail, the jail officers have to use more hands on by transporting the inmates to the lunchroom and also to visitations. Where …show more content…
In the Wabash County Jail all the doors and cells are opened with a key, but in the Miami County Jail only some of the doors are opened by the guards. Usually all the doors in Miami County are opened by a control room located in the jail. At Wabash County the inmates are very crowded due to the over population. This being, the guards security is threatened because the inmates are probably agitated from all the people. At the Miami County Jail, the jail can hold a lot more inmates, because they have the room to house them. Giving the inmates, some space probably helps the guards, because the inmates would not be that frustrated with all of the people.
The recreation rooms(rec room) at Wabash County Jail & Miami County Jail are kinda similar, but not really. At Miami county Jail there are two rec rooms and one can be opened up to get fresh air. Also at the Miami County Jail they have a gym, were at the Wabash County Jail they do not. At the Wabash County Jail they have a indoor rec room with a few benches and that is about it.
The Miami County Jail is hands down a better facility than Wabash County Jail. The reason to this is all the advancements in the Miami County Jail. Though the Miami County Jail was built in 2009 and the Wabash County Jail was built in 1979. Since there is such a big difference in age between the two jails, the Miami County Jail is a way better facility to house

    On October 8th we visited Fresno County Jail. Fresno County Jail is ran by the Fresno County Sheriffs Office. According to the visitation there is not one specific watch commander, there are several different individuals that are watch commander which is dependent on the shift. The head of the agency or director is Sheriff Margaret Mims. The inmates at this particular institution are supervised by approximately 350 individuals ranging from correctional officers, sergeants, and lieutenants. As defined by Fresno county it is the Correctional Sergeants duty to act as a lead supervisor for one or more functional work areas. Correctional Sergeants then report to Correctional Lieutenants who serve as a watch commander for an assigned work shift. Correctional Lieutenants are also the first management level classification within the correctional officer classification series. This particular jail is used to detain individuals awaiting court appearance, and to house convicted inmates sentenced to serve terms in the local jail. As I am writing this paper the current population is 2,639 where only 231 of those are female inmates. There are currently 959 sentenced inmates in the jail, and 1680 are considered to be “pretrial”.…

    Today I am going to talk to you about the types and methods of searches conducted by staff in a custodial environment and also control measures in a custodial environment. Firstly, I am going to talk to you about searches in a custodial environment. Searches are very important in prisons overall for security purposes. Searches can be planned or random or part of the system of the prison, routine or intelligence-led. Everyone entering the prison needs to be searched before they are allowed in the prison, including staff. The type of searches depends on many things such as, the risk of safety that person may cause and what type of category the prison is. High security prisons, that hold Category A prisoners, will routinely search all staff and visitors. There are also x-ray machines to look in bags, coats and shoes of people that cross the security gates of the prison. In Category C prisons, visitors and staff aren’t routinely searched before entering the prison. Items that aren’t allowed to enter prisons are; metal, cutlery, scissors, computers, mobile phones and obviously alcohol, drugs and weapons. All goods that are arriving to the prison have to be screened, even post. This is extremely important because many stuff can be smuggled into the items, for example drugs can be smuggled into the prison by being concealed in the spine binding of books and magazines. Prison staff also search the prisoners cells and other parts of the building on a routine and intelligence-led basis. They also search the perimeter of the prisons walls outside to make sure nothing bad was thrown into the prison, for example weapons. Searching can also involve certain detectors and also dogs, for dangerous items that have slipped through the security checks.     The four types of prisons are federal, state, municipal, and military. A federal prison is operated and managed by the government. Federal prisons normally house inmates who have been convicted of a crime in violation of a federal statue as opposed to a state or local laws. A municipal prison is a high security prison. A military prison is a prison operated by the military. Military prisons are used to house prisoners of war, enemy combatants, those whose freedom is deemed a national security risk by the military or national authority and member of the military found guilty of a serious crime. There is both minimum and maximum security prisons which are divided based on the nature of the crime committed by inmates at the institution. Total institutions are small societies and evolve their own distinctive values and styles of life and pressure residents to fulfill rigidly prescribed behavioral roles. Some of these places include prisons, concentrated camps, mental hospital, seminaries, and other facilities in which individuals are cut off from society forcibly or willingly. Jails play an important role in the criminal justice system because it keeps offenders that committed a crime off the streets.
