Volunteering In High School
I walked down the hall passing the classrooms, as the recess bell begins to ring, the students begin to burst out of the classrooms. It has been about a couple months since I've come to volunteer with the students. As herds of students beginning rushing by, I stopped and moved to the side, letting them pass. As they ran by, I yelled out “Walk guys, no running in the hall way”. The children turned as my voice traveled, echoing down the tunnel. They looked back with bright eyes and mouths wide open to the point I see their uvulas. They started to run towards me screaming “Chi Vivian Chi Vivian”, (Chi in Vietnamese means older sister).
First thought as they called my name, “Wow everyone got 2 inches taller and what they actually remember me?”
Over the course of high school I have been volunteering at my church mainly as a youth leader for students my age. However, recently for the past year and a half I transitioned into teaching the younger level about the Vietnamese language and bible study and incorporating scout skills such as knot tying, semaphore, and simple survival skills. One of the main problem I notice, while volunteering is that the kids can be uncomfortable with their peers at times when it comes to asking and answering questions. My group of students was able overcome that through a series of ice breakers and team building activities. Through the games and challenges the students begin to ignore how others viewed them but worked together to achieve a common goal. With my experience, I propose a youth challenge day where the community comes together and the youth are able to interact with others not just from their classrooms. Having young kids and young adults interact with new people will allow them to step out of their comfort zone and learn team building skills. With more interactions of our community we can collectively bring more positivity to Mira

Over the past summer I had the opportunity to go to Deep Impact in Shelby, North Carolina. Deep Impact is a mission camp that is run by The Baptist Men that gathers youth groups throughout the state to help the needy and to spread the Word of Jesus. There were different mission teams at the camp and I was placed on a construction team. On my construction team, we helped elderly and disabled people by building wheelchair ramps for them. The construction team had three supervisors, and they made the kids on the team do most of the work. We would do different kinds of work like digging out holes for posts, saw boarding, or screwing in decking boards. I really enjoyed this kind of work and it really made me feel good that when we finished, we were…

Since eighth grade I have volunteered regularly at Prodisee Pantry, a local food bank that gives out boxes of food every week. Prodisee was the first place I volunteered on my venture. Then I started to serve at my old middle school on Tuesdays, usually in the science department where I could offer the most assistance. From there I began leading a small group for middle schoolers at one of my churches on Wednesday nights. However, that was the extent of my service for the first two months of the year, but soon I did something completely new to remind me of the purpose of the 365…

I have had experience volunteering with the Urdd, supervising groups of primary school children at Glan-Llyn; where another member of staff and I were responsible for a group of children while they took part in various activities. Each Tuesday morning for the last year, I have volunteered at Ysgol Gynradd Cemaes at the Infants' department, where I helped the children with their work and spent time with small groups of children on specific tasks. During my time volunteering at Ysgol Gynradd Cemaes, I also spent time with pupils who suffered from learning difficulties, and this helped me to see how certain tasks have to be adapted in order for pupils of varying abilities to succeed. I have also played a large part in the process of transferring pupils in my school's catchment area from primary school to secondary school, by volunteering as a Year Twelve buddy, providing a point of contact at the school for the pupils if they felt in any way uneasy or upset. I was also part of a group of Year Twelve students who ran an arts club for pupils from years 3-9 where primary school children were introduced to the school and some of its current pupils and students through a series of arts and performance workshops. Through…

I have volunteered at a local hospital since my sophomore year of high school. I received a wide range of opportunities, from meeting family members at different areas of the hospital, to volunteering in the emergency room, to also giving comfort to families in the hospice. In addition, I am very culturally oriented and try to be active in the Indian community. Every summer, I volunteer at an Indian Saturday school which I have attended since kindergarten. I teach students the Indian customs and Hindu religion, as well as how to further their reading and writing skills in Sanskrit. I was responsible for these children for a whole week, and took care of them as if they were my siblings. I spend my free time teaching kids how to do Indian classical dance. I love being active and able to give back to my community as much as I can, and I would love to broaden my experience throughout the…

When I was younger, I participated in Girl Scouts where we volunteered in food pantries, senior centers, hospitals, animal shelters and charities for the less fortunate. We also participated in service projects such as making cards for veterans, making blankets for hospitals and the homeless, and made care packages for veterans and the hurricane victims. Volunteering is important to me because I had an aunt that unfortunately died of cancer and I feel that no one should have to go through the pain and suffering that she did.…

Donating, giving, and sharing are three related values that the majority of households in America all claim to practice and believe in. If this is true, then why is it so often that charities are underfunded? The problem is that many people seek happiness for themselves over the happiness of others. I believe that this is natural in human beings. When we are already so busy taking care of ourselves, I think we forget that other people could use a hand as well. Another underlying factor may be that many of us are not raised around charity. Instead of volunteering at shelters, America’s youth is often found at sports practices or at home fidgeting with technology, and until recently, I was no different.…
