Volunteer Autobiography
For a majority of my childhood I thought that Indiana was India and became utterly confused when someone talked about the long journey to the motherland. I knew that I was Indian and that my family was Punjabi Sikh, but beyond that I was disconnected and confused about the world and the culture that my parents and ancestors came from. When I was approached with the opportunity of volunteering as a summer camp counselor at the India Community Center, I was hesitant at first because I didn’t know how much I could contribute or get out of it, but becoming a volunteer has been one of the most enriching and fulfilling experiences I’ve ever had. At the India Community Center, there were summer camp classes offered that taught children from five to twelve years old about Indian music, dance, art, geography, and languages. One of the weeks centered around the vast varieties of food found from the different regions of India. We made chaat, pani puri, and mango lassi while learning about the cultural significance of each cuisine. The kids also learned the Indian national anthem and a Bollywood dance that was then performed for the parents at the end of the week. As we sang, cooked, and danced, we gained a better understanding of ourselves, our racial identity, and how beautiful and interesting our culture is. Each kid learned …show more content…
For the next three summers, I continued volunteering at the camp, helping the local South Asian youth become more interested in their culture. After seeing the positive impact I had by volunteering at these summer camps, I want to continue my involvement in the South Asian community during college. Through similar classes and creative conferences, I can help them explore and understand their

I folded each group and returned it to the box.…

Repeatedly, she found herself having to patiently educate people she met in Washington on the basic truths regarding Indian life and culture. Growing up, I was always asked one seemingly innocent question, “Where are you from?” I would struggle to find the right answer. Would I respond with “United States”, the name of the country that I grew up in, or rather “India”, the country which holds all of my extended family and culture? I would struggle to find activities and friends that were the “right fit” for me. However as I got older, I realized that I didn’t have “fit into” anything. I realized that I must create a balanced, diverse culture and environment for…

In class, Dr.Moore always reminds us that his job it to prepare us to be global citizens. He emphasizes the importance of being aware of other people’s perspectives, backgrounds, and beliefs. Last Saturday, I volunteered at Spirit Fest with Holt International. Spirit Fest is a multi-religious festival at the Circuit of the Americas, with live band performances and booths for multiple organizations. Holt International is an organization that focuses on family strengthening, orphan care, and adoption services on a worldwide scale. I helped run a booth to encourage people to donate and sponsor a child from developing countries, anywhere from Haiti to Cambodia to Mongolia. Holt International provides these kids with access to education, nutrition, and medicine. There were countless stories of children left in orphanages or on the verge of…

I am Indian-American. However, accepting this truth was not as easy when I was younger. During the ages of 13-14, the age in which any child is finding himself or herself, realizing their identity, and coming to a conclusion regarding who they are, it was difficult for me to find a common ground between the two clashing cultures I grew up in. American culture screams individualism, independency, selfishness to benefit oneself, and equality between gender and races, whereas Indian culture asserts collectivism, dependency, strong family ideals, and separation of men and women. These stark differences made it anything but easy for a confused, pre-pubescent child, like myself at the time, to find their identity.…

For one week every year Camp Choson, a camp made for Korean adoptees, takes place. From first through eleventh grade I have attended this camp. During those years at camp, I was able to meet people that share a similar background. Over the course of those ten years there were only about fifty days of camp, but in those days I became closer to them than the majority of my friends. The people at Camp Choson are practically a second family to me. Along with meeting people the camp also taught us about Korean culture. During camp, activities to teach us included Korean dance, drumming, Taekwondo, traditional foods, and learned about traditional and modern Korea. To teach us about modern Korea, the camp brought in a different group of people from Korea each year. The visitors ranged from break dancers to college students. By learning Korean culture I have realized its significance even though I hardly think about it. From attending Camp Choson, I have realized how major my heritage is in my life. Living as an adopted Korean, even unnoticed, is something that will always be my…

When I had first volunteered at a preparatory school as a teacher’s assistant, I was thrilled and excited. I enjoyed working with children and I admit, was slightly disillusioned with expectations that the children would be dutiful and effortless to watch over. Unfortunately, all my prior imaginations crashed the second I entered the classroom. Everywhere I saw, it was pure chaos. I dodged a flying crayon as I saw children running around throwing paper airplanes, balls, while others just stared at their iPads, focused on the latest game. Not a single one of them even listened to me or glanced at me as I tried to yell over the loud chatter.…

In my experience as bedside buddy volunteer at the Nicklaus Children Hospital, I have had the opportunity to interact with people of different cultural, ethical and socioeconomic backgrounds, in which I have been trained to create and maintain a respectful environment among employees and patients. In addition, I have learned to adopt certain behaviors that communicate respect to others.
