Volenteering Persuative Speech

Topic: Volunteering

Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to take opportunities to volunteer.

Theses Statement: Volunteering can provide benefits for young people such as discovering hidden talents, improving personal growth, and the importance of its values. I. Introduction
A. Attention Material: John F. Kennedy once said, "My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." What can you do for your country? One of the most influential ways you can help your country is by volunteering. According to the Bureau of Labor statistics, there is a tremendous decrease of volunteering from the statistics in 2008 and 2009. Volunteerism is declining.

B. Tie: When you think of volunteering you always think of offering, providing, and giving your time to others, but have you ever thought of the benefits that volunteering has for you?

C. Thesis: Today I will be talking about the benefits of volunteering, and the values of volunteerism. Volunteering can be beneficial to you and the people around you. It can provide benefits for young people such as discovering hidden talents, and improving personal growth.

Transition: Now think of this, if you were to put fifty people into a room with a shared interest, there is little doubt that you would find people with very different alternative interests, skills, and talents.

II. Body

A. Why is volunteering a great way to discover talents and develop new skills?

1. Volunteering brings you into community groups, if you cooperate and unite with a diversity group of people toward a common goal, whether it is a fundraiser for researchers to cure a disease or to help local families who has fallen in a time of calamity, volunteers make helping people happen. There are too many people in the community that need help and our Government could not afford. Therefore there are amounts of community services around the assist those unfortunates.

2. Our life is improved by offering helps to get jobs done effectively through professional skills and experiences. Work division equals to less work for each person and it also saves time. Therefore while trying to get a job done like community activity, the more the merrier.

3. Volunteer jobs often give people the opportunity to learn how to do something they did not know how to do, and it is never too late to learn new skills and there are no reason why you should stop enlarging your knowledge and experience. If you have a passion for art but you have a career in computing, then why not volunteer at your local theaters or museums? Perhaps your ambitions are to be a Doctor so why not find out about volunteer opportunities at your local hospitals. Through new experiences, you may discover your hidden talents or interests by taking a little adventure exploring new fields, and you get to meet new people with the same interest as you do.

1. As a volunteer, you may a new perspective by seeing people who makes you feel that you have more ability than, and you get to help them with your ability, yet it helps you see your life from many different point of views. Acknowledging that there are people in this world that share the same air, live on the same land, drink the same water but living in a condition that you could never imaging yourself in. Help them with your skills and tell them we are all the same.

2. Volunteering is about giving your time, energy and skills generously with a heart to help. Unlike many things in life, you can choose to be involved in volunteering. As a volunteer you have made a decision to help on your own accord so there will be no pressure about achieving tasks that are beyond your ability, you always help people within your range of ability. Volunteers express a sense of achievement and motivation, and this is ultimately generated from your desire and enthusiasm to help.

3. It may be true that no one can solve all problems around the globe, but what you can do is make that little corner of the world where you live just that little bit better.

Transition: You can see the surprising benefits of volunteering, and how helping others could, at the same time be betterment to yourself. Now I will speak about the values of volunteering.

C. It is important to understand the values of volunteering.

1. People volunteer for an endless variety of reasons. As being said, many people want to gain experience, acquire new skills, meet new people, or expand their network of contacts as a way to get a new job or start a career. Others just want to give back to their community, to help a friend or promote a worthwhile activity. They do it because it makes them feel good and it gives them what current Chair of Volunteer Calgary, Dan O'Grady describes as a "private smile." We tend to feel that our existence means a lot to the world and we feel valuable.

2. "Not everything that counts can be counted. And not everything that can be counted, counts." - Albert Einstein. This is the intrinsic value of volunteering. It is not about money. And volunteering should not be measured in that way, ever! We can add up the hours but not a dollar value.

3. The following is a poem by Tom Krause entitled, "It Only Takes a Moment," that I would like to share with you.

It Only Takes a Moment
It only takes a moment to reach out to be a friend, but to the one who needs you the memory never ends.
A simple act of kindness to a person you don't know may plant a seed of friendship that for them will always grow.
We sometimes lose perspective of the difference we can make, when we care more of our giving and care less of what we take.
So remember that your actions may help change a life someday.
Always think about the person that you meet along the way.
For it only takes a moment to reach out to be a friend, but to the one who needs you the memory never ends.

III. Conclusion
A. Volunteering overall benefits one in several ways and can impact lives in positive ways. Just as I mentioned, the importance of its values, benefits for young people such as discovering hidden talents, and improving personal growth. Why not take a chance to volunteer anywhere you like and see what kind of impact it has on you. Here is a message that I would like to leave you with from Susan J, Ellis, the American Volunteerism Consultant. She says, “Paul Revere earned his living as a silversmith. But what do we remember him for? His volunteer work. All activism is volunteering in that it's done above and beyond earning a living and deals with what people really care passionately about. Remember, no one gets paid to rebel. All revolutions start with volunteers."
