Voice In Shoeless Joe By J. D. Salinger
Throughout the novel, Shoeless Joe, certain voices are heard by main characters Ray Kinsella and J.D. Salinger. Ray and J.D. hear several voices that put into motion main events of the novel. At the same moment Ray or Jerry hear a voice, they also immediately know what that phrase is calling them to do. The voices clearly pertain to getting people like Jerry and Moonlight Graham to come to the field and help the game of baseball. However, these voices can also be applied to other characters like Richard and John Kinsella who have their own heroes journeys. “If you build it, he will come.” is arguably the most famous quote from the novel, Shoeless Joe. Ray hears this voice in the middle of his corn field and sees a vision of a baseball field

His life was ordinary and he wasn’t exceptional, and he wanted so much more than his mundane routine. The movie begins with a scene of Joe walking into the factory where he works. You can tell very obviously that he hates his job from the tone in the first four minutes. As soon as he gets out of his car Joe finds his foot landed in a puddle of mud, but this didn’t even seem to faze him. His face read, “Of course this happened, this happens every day”, as he proceeded down the muddy path with everyone else. As he walks down the crooked road that leads to the gates the sole of his shoe rips, and after recognizing this he continues to traipse along. He gets pushed into the courtyard and throws his hands in the air and looks to the sky as the song in the background plays: “Another day older and deeper in debt - Saint Peter, don’t you call me ‘cause I can’t go - I owe my soul to the company store”. Joe is a classic victim of an “everything bad happens to me” scenario. He hates his job and he always complains that the office was making him sick. Every day was the same monotonousness. He had completely lost his passion for life. He was constantly distracted at work and didn’t really care. Once Joe found out he was sick, quitting his job was the first thing he did. He didn’t want to waste his last bit of life working at the same place he had been at for four and a half years; doing work he claimed he could’ve done in six months. “That’s four years wasted. If i had them now, it would be like gold in my…

He participated in his first professional baseball season at age nineteen. He played for Philadelphia and Cleveland before joining the White Sox. In the 1919 World Series, Joe Jackson played phenomenally. He made no errors and had a batting average of .375. He even set a record with his twelve hits. “If you build it, he will come.” Such a powerful phrase. A phrase that was so powerful that it drove Ray to plow under his precious crop to build, of all things, a baseball field. A crazy thought for any farmer. Many farmers in the Midwest struggle just to make ends meat, they use every inch of land possible to farm. Who would build a baseball field in the middle of nowhere, in land needed for “more important things?”…

Joe would control everything Janie did. Not only does Joe control everything Janie does, he also told people she is not fit to give a speech, “Thank yuh fuh yo’ compliments, but mah wife don’t know nothin’ ‘bout no speech-makin’. Ah never married her for nothin’ lak dat. She’s uh women and her place in in de home” Joe makes Janie seem as if she is not as intelligent as him and that her place is in the house (Hurston 43). Joe silenced Janie by not letting Janie make a speech to the crowd, he took away her voice and thought by not letting her make a speech. Joe always tells Janie not to speak to people who “don’t even own de house dey sleep in” or anyone who Joe felt were less than him (Hurston 54). Telling Janie who she can and cannot speak to is restricting her from expressing who she is and voicing her opinion. Joe limiting who Janie can and cannot socialize with also keeps Janie in the box that Joe had created around her to keep her in check. This is essential to the portrayal of the story because it includes Joe’s thoughts and feelings about the father-son relationship, but does not include his father’s. Joe elucidates that, “Tomorrow for the first time in all their trips together he wanted to go fishing with someone other than his father.” By sharing this information he is acknowledging that it is a milestone of sorts in their relationship, because never in the eight years they have come to this place together has either of them gone fishing with anyone else but each other. Using Joe’s perspective on this event allows the reader to speculate on how his father will react, and to infer what his true feelings actually are below the surface. The reader can clearly see the extent to which Joe is struggling with breaking the news to his father. He admits that, “It was an ending and a beginning and he wondered just how he should tell his father.” The fact that Joe is so cautious of his father’s feelings shows how much he cares for him, but it also confirms the idea that the balance of their relationship has been slightly disrupted with the onset of Joe’s adolescence. This is the time when he attempts to tiptoe around his father’s feelings in order to slightly break free from tradition as he grows up. His father’s point of view is not shared during this story, so the reader must analyze his interaction with Joe to…

Janie wishes to have a voice and be a regular citizen amongst the townsfolk. Immediately upon being selecting Joe the mayor, the townspeople asked Janie to make a speech, Joe thwarted the attempt to let her speak, stating that her place was the home and that’s the only reason he married her. This is the first major crack in Janie and Joe’s relationship. Joe made her a woman without a voice, she didn’t much mind that she has to take care of the house, but she does not wish to be spoken for. From this point on, the treatment of Janie by Joe continues to limit her voice and alienate Janie from the rest of the town that she so desires to be a part of. An example of this is Janie and Joe’s house. It is the only two-story house in the town and this, along with other reasons, cause the town to become jealous of Janie and interact…
