Vocabulary: A Personal Narrative Essay
When’s the last time you’ve had a good laugh? If you haven’t had a good laugh today then it’s your lucky day! One thing that makes me laugh everyday is my little 5 month old sister, Drew. Everyday when I come home from school I always go straight to my sister Drew and play with her. Since she is at that age where baby teeth are starting to come in she’s teething, so she likes to try and eat everything! So when I go and play with her she grabs my face and tries to eat my nose… it’s like she’s a zombie! Not only that but I have a nickname for her, Drooly. I call her that sometimes because she is constantly drooling on everything. It’s so bad that her face gets all red when she drools! When Drew tries to eat my nose she gets her slobber ALL over

One would think that purchasing your first home would be a very fascinating experience; after all it is one of the most major purchases of your entire life. In America, home ownership ties in with the American Dream and the spirit of working hard to one day earn through hard work a home with a white picket fence. My husband and I felt that it was time for us to reward ourselves for all the hard work we have been putting in over the years by purchasing our first home, which was well overdue. I quickly learned the process of purchasing your first home can be very frustrating and stressful. However, if you survive the home buying process the reward is priceless once you move into your “American Dream.”…

When Mariella was brought to the Psychologist’s office, Mariella would not speak or make eye contact with the Psychologist. Mariella played silently with some dolls that were in the office. The Psychologist noticed that Mariella seemed anxious, so she said, “Mariella, nothing bad will happen when you talk to me.” Mariella looked at the Psychologist for the first time and tears rolled down her cheeks. The Psychologist offered Mariella a large stuffed poodle, and Mariella hugged it tightly. Then the Psychologist said, “I mean it, Mariella, it’s safe to talk in here with me.” After a few minutes hugging the poodle, Mariella asked, “What’s his name”. The Psychologist responded, “Mr. Friend.” Following this, a more normal conversation and a playtime ensued.…

Has there ever been a memory/moment in your life, when every time you think back on it you laugh to yourself? English is not my first language. In fact, I didn’t learn it well enough to have a conversation until I was about 10 years old. I remember the embarrassment of being new to a country I called home after living in Mexico for years. Things changed quickly the first day of 8th grade. I remember being energetically greeted by a slender athletic man in his fifties in a muggy summer morning. The hum of the air conditioning as welcome sound as we found our seats in this room that smelled of being closed the last few months. His name was Mr. Goodman and he was, by most accounts, an “asshole.” This was a descriptor of which he was proud. Even the other faculty thought so. He was a strange man, but he had his reasons. Surprisingly, he was also one of the best teacher’s I’ve encountered to this day. He had a brutally visceral way of making you care about learning. His class would soon change the way I spoke English for the rest of my life.…

The first books I ever started reading were Winnie the Pooh and Dr Suess books. When I was young my parents were really good about getting me started with reading different books and for a long time I loved reading, as long as it was books I got to choose and enjoyed reading myself. Once I got further along in school and they started mandating what books we had to read I got to the point where I didn’t find reading enjoyable any longer. I didn’t like most of the books my teachers were picking for us to read so I felt like I had to force myself to read them and it caused me to even stop reading books outside of school…

My writing has changed a lot in my first-semester essay writing class. I finally took a class that teaches me useful information and how to properly write an essay. Essay Writing overall was a fun experience it was a slow start for me in the beginning but once I was able to get the work done I was fine. There were a lot of positives to taking this class. I started the year struggling to come up with ideas to write about nut now I can brainstorm and put my words down on the paper better than ever. “If I could travel anyplace in the world for free, I would want to go to North Korea. I would love to see what it's like.” I struggled with proper punctuation and the use of commas and such throughout my high school career and I still struggle with it I hope to learn more about it in the near future. “Cars are one of the best inventions ever.” I needed some direction on making my sentences longer with getting to the point at the same time. There's a lot of small things I need to still improve on but I feel like I got a good start with the Essay Writing course. I got a lot of useful feedback from Mrs.Pennings on all my essays like when to use certain words and proper punctuation and some compliments the really…

In my experience with Writing II, being able to get extra help in perfecting my writing skills was beneficial and helped me understand composition 1. Also being in a small class environment was useful for talking to other classmates and with getting help; which also helped me stay focused on my writings. By going over Critical Reviews before Composition 1, it helped tremendously by preparing me for my next class. Going to seminars and workshops was interesting, entertaining and was also awarding with all the information I had received out of them. I was nervous going into Writing II and Composition 1 at the same time but it ended up being easier than I had expected. Although I was surprised at how little work there was for Writing II, I feel…

    My Literacy Narrative

My memory of my how I became literate is and always will be a part of me that I will never forget. I suppose I heard the sounds around me and connected them with emotions. Crying, I noticed, got a quick response from my parents, and usually some food. My communication development was identical to every other child learning to talk. Listening. But everyone has a story behind their literacy. Mine was one day, when we were driving to the grocery store, with the radio turned on, my jam turned on. It was the ABC’s. This song was unexpected, not only because of its difference in the nature of the regular pop songs, but that it was a new song altogether. Nonetheless, I began to rock along with the catchy tune of the song. I longed for more and demanded it…

For me, learning to read and write was quite an adventure. It started where most children begin—the infamous realm of kindergarten. Now you have to understand that prior to this I had never spoken English before. So as a five year old little Hispanic girl, I was faced with quite a predicament—learning to read and write in a language I could not speak or understand.…

My experience with words goes way back. Much like Sherman Alexie, I was very young when first exposed to words, so young I can’t remember there being a time before books were a part of my life. I imagine my mother was was reading to me since my first day of life. She would read me story after story in the quiet hours before bedtime, stories about fantastic creatures and magical places. I never wanted the stories to end. Before I could fully understand words I had loved them.…

The time of the year had come. 5th grade had started! It was a new, fresh school year, which meant something very momentous (at least for me) was coming up soon - the student council elections. You see, I was one of the most courteous, bright kids in the fifth grade at the time, and decided to take a chance in the elections. I thought back to the time I was in fourth grade, making a fool of myself by creating a boring speech with maybe a little bit too much vocabulary. I at least tried my best, and even though I may have known a couple of juicy words which some kids may not have known, all that mattered was that I gave it my all. But now, I emerged as a stronger, smarter 5th grade girl who was ready to take on anything. “I need to get my revenge,”…

During my time at Conroe High, I have been nothing but content, and upon being asked about a rule to be removed or editing, I had to think in a larger scale. Although my peers would likely call for something menial, such as dress code regulations to be removed, what I would call for is a bit more extreme. I would request the complete reorganization and separation of the English department, and the subsequent removal or replacement of the English credit requirement to graduate, because, while advanced English classes are an enrichment of the mind and perspective, they, nor their more basic counterparts - which are little more than busy work, are a unique or essential part of a legitimate high school major.…
