7. Figurative language- The language or text that the author decided to use in this book is very significant to this book because it is showing two sides to Lia-The inside and outside. The text gives us a better understanding of what this book means. “ my stepsister Emma’’ ‘’When I was a real girl’’ “I.Am.Fine” “33 times” “I need to eat, I hate eating” “I’m okay.”

6. Emma is an important character in the book winter girls because Lia really shows how much she cares about Emma and how much she will change herself for Emma . One time Lia does this is when she is forcing herself to eat because she doesn't want to be a bad influence on Emma. When Lia goes to the hospital later in the book , one of the first things she does is ask if she is going to see Emma or when she will see Emma. “Emma waves an gives me a small berri dazzle smile.”the cereal i really good. In the book wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson a girl named Lia overbrooke is an anorexic cutter who worries about her self image, her family, and her life. The story starts when Lias best friend Cassie dies in a motel room, this highlights all of Lia and her pain. As children Lia and cassie made a vow to be the skinniest girls in school, cassie is bulimic and Lia is anorexic. Lia becomes haunted by cassie's ghost, Lia starts struggling with having to balance life and her eating and school. Lia is struggling to get help until she cant do it anymore. She soon realizes that cassie's ghost doesn't have to hunt her and she can get better but only if she wants to. In the end of the book Lia says “ I am thawing” which confirms that she is getting better but also giving the reason behind the title of the

    Reading Wintergirls was eye-opening and heartbreaking for me because I began to understand more about the mentality behind anorexia nervosa. I always thought that individuals diagnosed with anorexia knew they should be eating, and were choosing not to because they felt they needed to stay thin. Reading this novel and reading the diagnosis in the DSM made me realize those diagnosed with anorexia sometimes don’t feel they need to eat.
