•The Merle gene creates mottled patches of color in a solid color coat, blue or odd-colored eyes, and can affect skin pigment as well.…
Vitiligo occurs when the body attacks the cells that control skin pigmentation. The areas that are attacked then cause smooth, white patches to form on the body when the skin loses pigment. These patches often form on the hands and face. Vitiligo on the scalp causes white hair to grow from that area. It is not a painful condition, but people who have it are often sensitive about the way they look. Only around one percent of the population is affected by this condition.…
The sun emits harmful ultraviolet rays. Excessive exposure to harmful sun rays accelerates the melanin production in the body and leads to darkening of the exposed skin. This causes the skin to tan which may even lead to other serious skin problems like acne, pimples, fine lines, wrinkles, skin burn, premature aging, and hyper-pigmentation and dark spots. Tanning usually makes the skin look dull and lifeless. There are several chemical cosmetic products that can be used to get rid of skin tan. However, the chemicals may not be good for the skin and may harm the skin in different ways and so it is better to use natural anti-tan methods and remedies to get rid of tan.…
There is no known way to prevent or cure vitiligo. However, several methods, including cosmetics, re-pigmentation using UV light therapy, corticosteroid creams, depigmentation of unaffected skin areas, and skin grafting, can be used to improve the appearance of skin severely affected by vitiligo.…

As a kid who loved to be outside Gretchen Hoechner was always spending her time outside playing sports and often came home with a red burnt face. By age 11 she was already coming aware of the serious issues with her skin. At age 26 she was finally diagnosed with melanoma when she noticed a mole that didn’t quite look right and quickly went to the dermatologist. It was hard for her to believe that at only age 26 she was dealing with fatal cancer. The one thing that she tries to educate people about is the fact that although tanning may seem both outdoors and inside you should know what it really does to you skin. She hopes she can get other young people to become are aware the threat of melanoma. Melanoma and other types of skin cancer are arising…
How is your tan developing? Dark? Dark as you want to be? You know with the weather improving and the fourth of July just around the corner the opportunity to go outside in the sun, sun bathing, swimming - well, you know what I mean - can invite sunburn and unwanted looks at those white legs.…
By now, many of you have noticed that I have been growing a moustache since the beginning of November. Fortunately, a few members of our team have joined me, as Joe’s and Ty’s moustaches are beginning to strengthen as well, so I’m not the only one!…
There are several factors that contribute to the cause of BCC. These factors include, light colored skin, light colored eyes, blonde or red hair, overexposure to x-rays or radiation, many moles, genetics, many severe sunburns early in life, and long term daily sun exposure (Medline Plus, 2012). Individuals with light colored skin, hair, and eyes have poor tanning abilities and are more likely to have sun-damaged skin (Roewart-Hober, 2007). Radiation therapy in childhood for ringworm on a 58 year old patient caused an aggressively growing BCC that took over most of the posterior scalp (Asilian, 2005). Genetics also contribute to your likelihood of getting a BCC. A family history of skin cancer can increase your chances of having a BCC (Skelton, 2009). Also, there is several inherited and acquired skin disorders associated with BCC. These disorders include xeroderma pigmentosum, nevoid basal cell syndrome, Bazex-syndrome, Rasmussen syndrome, Rombo syndrome, and albinism (Roewert-Hober, 2007). Although there are several contributing factors to BCC, the number one cause is sun exposure and other ultraviolet…
In recent years, there has been a lot of controversy about tanning, and tanning beds. From the moment we are born we are being warned about the harms of UV rays. When going to the beach, or to play outside parents are always lathering their children up with sunblock, and constantly reapplying. When the children grow old enough to go to the beach by themselves parents are still warning them to remember to put sunblock on and yet as one walks down the beach you see an increasing amount of people tanning. This tanning behavior is well known, you either lay flat on your back or flat on your stomach. Some people will read, listen to music, and even sleep. Most often when people engage in these types of behavior they are doing so to…
One unpleasant aspect of genetic disease is that often they come unexpectedly and with little warning. A few summers ago, my little sister [Lisa]’s face began to undergo a startling metamorphosis. Her skin, once bronze and glistening, began turning white as death and splotchy. My sister’s precious forehead, hair and eyelids began to look like a pale jigsaw puzzle, interrupting her once perfect complexion. This genetic disorder, vitiligo, has permanently changed her appearance and her daily life. I looked on angrily, frustrated by my helplessness, as doctors prescribed her various treatment creams, but offered no cure. My love for my little sister and unrelenting wish for her happiness fueled me to seek the source of her problem – which lies in genetic research.…
In Richard Rodriguez’s story "Complexion," he solves the conflict between his brown skin color and his own identity. Rodriguez had accepted who he is and was no longer concerned about his brown skin color and facial features that identify him as a working class Mexican. He stated that his skin color means nothing to his identity because Rodriguez realizes his skin color does not label him "disadvantaged" in life (148). Rodriguez's real identity separates himself from the Mexican workers. He tells himself "What made me different from them was an attitude of mind, my imagination of myself"(148). In the end, Rodriguez finally understands the Mexican workers, their silence of struggle that stays with him.…
Most people have slow progression of vitiligo. In some people the problem disappears by itself; for others it doesn't. For people whose vitiligo does not disappear on their own, there is various treatment options. There are multiple vitamins, like the B-complex multivitamin. Also, there is a specialty supplement called Total Balance. Total Balance contains Folic Acid, Vitamin E 600-800 IU (international units) and ascorbic acid. A topical treatment that is used is a Vitamin D ointment. People with vitiligo could also use makeup to hide the patches or do a PUVA light treatment.…
