The Virtue of Hope
Hope is the Theological virtue by which we desire the kingdom of Heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ’s promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help of the Holy Spirit. The theological virtue of hope is the basis on which the Christian’s moral life is based on. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, the virtue of hope guides Christian’s to have a righteous life with a great relationship with God. We first see this virtue unfold at the beginning when Jesus is preaching the proclamation of the beatitudes. This virtue is also expressed in prayers, such as the Our Father. This virtue is also revealed through the promise of a Messiah. This promise gave the Jewish people hope through difficult times. This demonstrates how this virtue can also help us through difficult times. The virtue of hope is what keeps us going. In times of suffering and difficulties, God reminds us that He is there for us no matter what. We question God for why things happen to us, but we do not realize that God is the one who chooses the problems we face to test and prove if we are capable of achieving His challenges. “Better Days” is a song by Goo Goo Dolls, that points to a hope in the future. It tells us that there are problems in the world that affect people really badly; however we are to forgive the people who cause these problems. Through forgiving the people that hurt us we are helping change the world. We are changing the world because we are forgiving them and not letting that hatred go into our hearts and change us to mean people. Therefore we are treat people kindly because we are brothers and sisters under God. Overall hope is the Theological virtue by which makes a person desire eternal life, the heavenly vision of God, and gives one the confidence of receiving the grace necessary to reach heaven. It is necessary for salvation and acts of hope are also necessary as well. The virtue of hope is what motivates us to keep going. We hope for the coming of God and that He will bring justice. I hope for in the future for better days as well. Better days where people treat each other nicely, where there is no discrimination, where there’s no violence, where there is no seclusion of outcasts, and where people feel comfortable and are not scare of expressing themselves.
