Violence Poem

Violence affects the lives of people like a car without brakes,
Spiraling out of control with one simple mistake.
It may seem fun and the cool thing to do,
When you make a mean joke about the weird kid at school.
Sure when you say it, he fakes a smile and laughs along,
But on the inside, the comment plays over and over like a catchy song.
When he gets home, he takes a quick glance in the mirror.
It’s the same reflection he always sees, but this time, someone different appears.
They’re too short, too fat, too stupid and weak.
Too many freckles and pimples and two giant clumsy feet.
The next day, he hides under a large sweatshirt and jeans.
But that doesn’t stop another person from saying something mean.
He knows his clothes weren’t bought from a thrift store, but he can’t help take a glance in the mirror once more.
The person he sees is poor and broke, with holey jeans, crappy shoes, and a dirty brown coat.
The next day he fakes sick and doesn’t go to class, But he can’t tell his mom and he can’t tell his dad.
The reason why he dreads going to school, is he’s ashamed that everything about him is uncool.
A few weeks go by and he eats lunch alone, There are no more friendly numbers to dial on his cell phone,
The anger and frustration is bubbling up inside, he fees the only way out is to take his own life.
But one day he gets an email from an address he doesn’t not.
Saying to stay strong, be tough, suicide is not the way to go.
The email talks about a smart girl from New York
Who kids used to call a geek, a nerd and a dork.
She tried to kill herself but fortunately her parents found out and she didn’t succeed.
Now that smart girl from New York is fully grown.
With a husband, a house and three beautiful kids of her own.
Everything in her life turned out just fine.
So, pray and be patient because it will take time.
And with those sweet, simple words, the email ended.
And the boy was in tears because he knew just who sent it.

In the opening verses of “Mirror,” the narrator commences its narration by declaring itself neutral. It announces it has “no preconceptions” and without bias or emotions it will metaphorically “swallow immediately” what it needs as it is “unmisted by love or dislike”. It is the truth which causes much grief to a woman who visits it each day. Unlike Plath’s poem, Harwood’s omniscient narrator describes a woman who’s “clothes are out of date” to further enhance the…

A soldier’s suffering holds no refrain from anyone, no matter what title or identity they have. In both the worlds of soldiers in those in the poem entitled “losses” by Randall Jarrell and at Devon school in “A Separate Peace” by John Knowles, there are several relationships that they share. Both center around the lives of soldiers and soon to be soldiers during the cruel time of the second World War which was happening in Europe. Jarrell experiments with multiple identity in the combination of several speakers united in one, all wasted even before they could be conceded into the real experience of war. In the book World War II symbolizes many themes related to each other in the novel, from the arrival of adulthood to the triumph of the Evil…

“Slaveship,” by Lucille Clifton, is a free verse poem from the perspective of slaves that the white men capture and trade in the slave trade, forcing them to travel on the Middle Passage. Ironically, the ships bear the names of religious symbols and figures such as Jesus, Angel of God, and Grace of God (lines 14-15) even though the act of slavery is one of the most sinful systems in the eyes of these slaves and in the eyes of all decent human beings.…

"Hitcher" By Simon Armitage, "Education For Leisure" By Carol Anne Duffy, "My Last Duchess" and "The Lab" by Robert Browning are all poems that deal with violence or the prospect of violence. ‘The Laboratory’ is a dramatic monologue about a woman who has discovered her husband is having an affair with two other women. She is plotting to poison both of the mistresses. My Last Duchess’ is also a dramatic monologue in which the Duke is telling his new bride father’s representative about a portrait of his last wife and how he had to have her killed because he did not think she behaved like a Duchess or a wife should. ‘Hitcher’ tells the story of a disturbed man who picks up a hitchhiker, then brutally murder him and also seems satisfied about it. ‘Havisham’ is a monologue using a female voice who talks about emotions and memories of a woman who was jilted by a man on her wedding day. I will compare and contrast the ways violence is shown throughout the poems.…

There he goes, walking down the street with a sparkling 20 carat diamond stud on his ear. He has perfectly straight pretty white teeth. It appears that he just came back from the barber shop getting a new fade. Perhaps he has a doo rag under his sports cap, a fresh shirt over a clean beater that looks like it just got out of the dryer. His shoes are brand named and spotless. But then he turns around and all his hard work on looking good goes down the drain. His pants below his butt revealing the designs, name brand of his underwear and the elastic on his boxers, tucked over his shirt. He pulls his pants up repeatedly because they start to drift down as he walks a perfect slow dip walk, so his pants don’t fall down together.…

With all of the violence in the past, and now the most recent shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, society is more scared than ever. Dylann Roof, proven to be a white supremacist, walked into a church in Charleston, South Carolina and killed innocent people. This incident hit home for so many Americans because not only did the innocent people die, but it was in one of the safest places imaginable, a church (Tauber, Michelle). Many believe that weapons are to blame for this, and others believe that racism is the main focal point. This is not the first of violent crimes in a local church. A poem was written by Dudley Randall about a true story that happened in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963. A group of white supremacists bombed a church that belonged to Martin Luther King Jr. What they did not know was that there were four little girls playing in there at the time. The church should be a safe, quiet place one can pray to God, but these incidents indicate that violence is creeping into the most innocent of…

Nursery rhymes, fables and fairy tales have always been a part of childhood. They usually have some type of moral meaning or happy ending. Initially, most of these rhymes and stories were not meant for children, lots of them mocked the history of politics or they revealed abuse toward children. Women also received their share of violence in some of the cute little jingles. For example;…
