The Crucifixion

For Vinegar Boy’s whole life, he wanted Jesus to heal his ugly birthmark. In other words, without the birthmark gone, he wouldn’t be the “perfect son” for Nicholas. For example, “Open them, open them”, the boy pleaded silently. This is because Vinegar Boy thought if Jesus didn’t physically see him he wouldn’t be healed. Concluding, Vinegar Boy hopes Jesus restores his face, to become Nicolas’s perfect son.

Art is a tradition weaved throughout human history. Though it may be beautiful and pleasant to look at, there must be some other reason for its importance in humanity’s heritage than the pleasure received from seeing something beautiful. Pablo Picasso said, “Art is a lie which makes us realize the truth.” This quote is used as an epigraph for Chaim Potok’s My Name is Asher Lev. One can never depict the exact truth, as life exists. However, seeing the way other people observe the world can help audiences discover new perspectives, and learn how they themselves feel; thereby realizing their own truth, as demonstrated in Asher Lev’s Brooklyn Crucifixions.…

It quickly becomes evident that the boy's inexperience with money will lead to his downfall when Jesus tells that he gathers all together and takes "his journey to a far country" (9). He is out to live the good life as he wastes "his substance with riotous living" (9). This sinful life he is living would bring shame to his family, especially his father. This father/son relationship can already be associated with the God/man relationship. Man lives a sinful life that brings shame to God-- man's creator, or father-- but it is the forgiveness God has that gives man hope.…

Because he does that his parents do not think that they’ve caused him any harm, he states that in line 2. He is not a happy child. However it is like he finds some sort of redemption in his songs and ways of dancing. The child states again that his parents are gone to the church to praise God, and his priest and his king. Then in the final line he goes on to say that they make up a heaven of our misery. What does that mean? To the child heaven is not the paradise that one may be made to believe. It actually causes him pain. It symbolizes how the priest, God and the king exploit the children. The child is not fond of his parents, the priest, God or the king. The parents are not practicing proper Christianity. Of course in Christianity children are taught to honor and respect their parents. However, Jesus says in Luke 18:17 that anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter in it. A child is supposed to be precious and so are their characteristics. Unfortunately, the child’s Christian parents are not teaching or practicing…

He explains that boys hide their feelings they may seem normal on the outside but on the inside they are hiding something. When they are asked if anything is wrong they say no everything is just fine. This is because ever since the boy was a child he has been taught not to express his emotions. Little boys are made to feel ashamed of their feelings. Also society places an emphasis on boys separating from their mother at an unnecessarily young age. Often the result of all this is that the boys decide to be silent. They learn to suffer quietly and retreat behind the mask. This is why the boys do not express their feelings, because they are told not to. What tells them not to is the boy code. It says the men should be stoic, stable, and independent. Boys are not to share their pain or grief openly. Also this code says the boys should be daring and do risky behaviors. The most traumatizing code is the fact that boys should not express feelings which might be mistakenly as "feminine" –dependence, warmth, and empathy. This causes boys to never act this way and hide these feelings. These are the reasons the "mask" is formed over the boy.…

While enrolled as a student in the CRC, there was a performance being given in which the entire school was to attend, but as his friend and spokesman was absent that day, nobody thought to bring Joseph, so he had to sit alone in the classroom throughout the performance. Throughout the performance, Joseph is left with only his thoughts to keep him company, a skill in which he is masterful. Joseph’s isolation is grounded not in the notion that nobody interacts with him, as that is clearly not the case, but rather in the lack of control of his own body. Joseph has an unable body, but a mind that works as beautifully as any other human being with which he comes into contact. His very dependency on others’ and their willingness to provide him with normal childhood experiences and overlook his unable body is also what fuels his feeling of…
