Vik Muniz
Documentaries in today’s society are a way to provide the audience with true facts about history, nature, current events, etc. The agenda of them is to try to persuade us the audience into believing what is being stated in the documentary. Vik Muniz in Waste Land does a good job persuading his audience by showing how he is a hero by incorporating the pickers into a giant piece of art. Similarly, by focusing on the catadores low-class life, the themes: classism, the art of salvation and environmentalism overall play a huge in this working class by having an artist give the pickers an opportunity to earn more money into pieces of art. Generally, classism plays a huge part in today’s society, in Waste Land, it is a major problem with the low class the catadores are in, Muniz sees that they are in poverty so he approaches this problem by creating a giant …show more content…
To help the pickers become wealthier for a short period, Muniz makes this inspiring experience for both him and the pickers embellish their beauties into a big piece of art. Once Muniz shows them his goal about these artworks the pickers were not very interested until they had finished these beautiful artworks and had sold them for money. They were all inspired by his art and also noticed that they can do more than what they are doing now. Even though Muniz did help some pickers get money, it was only for a short period of time. Once he showed them how big they can become, the next thing you know, he leaves and the pickers return back to their daily jobs. There was nothing really accomplished, he just showed how he can make a difference and then just leaves us the audience in a shock. The pickers beauties of the art played as a role of salvation but for only a short amount of time. They saw themselves not only a picker, but as how beautiful they are as a person and can create art with

Las Hurdes: Tierra Sin Pan directed by Luis Buñuel is an ethnographic surrealism documentary first shown in 1933. The film was not made to spew facts at its audience members but to make the audience think about what they were seeing and hearing. Buñuel’s film is a documentary but in a broad sense of what a documentary is. It is no wonder that his move is different to any other movie out there because he was forced to learn how to film himself because cameras were just starting to be used. Even though the narrator is unreliable there is much that can be learnt about the Hurdanos from Luis Buñuel’s film, land Without bread.…

The films (or documentaries) are not naïve as we think. To find the reasons for making a film, we should ask questions such as ‘Why was the film made?’ ‘Who was it made for?’ and ‘what can it be used for?’. If we do not recognize that the film is objective or not, then we can learn wrong things, and have wrong thoughts about what we watched. For example, we watched a film about some Americans who is under attack by natives in a town, and they kill those native people to survive. After watching this film, we directly think that the native people are dangerous, aggressive, and must be killed, but if we just watched a part of this fight with the viewpoint of an American? If the intention of this film is to make us think bad about natives? We cannot know, we must watch the whole fight between natives and Americans with whole person, and whole viewpoint of both of them.…

    Lucy Walker Waste Land

Lucy Walker, the director of Waste Land, focuses on the perspective of Vik Muniz using the camera lens as an artistic and metaphorical eye to represent his distance, understanding, and ignorance on the Wasteland. Scenes within this documentary, especially in the beginning and middle, the camera view is often mimicking the changes in perspective of what Waste Land has within Vik’s point of view. Often the camera shows Vik glancing at an object, immediately the camera switches to his perspective in the same position he is viewing that said object or person. As an artistic trope, Lucy Walker focuses the camera as an eye that leads the viewer to have the same line of sight and view point as Vik did experiencing Waste Land…

Sometimes the production of art is related to the artist’s political convictions. To what extent is this demonstrated by the founders of El Teatro Campesino? In El Teatro Campesino the artist’s political convictions are expressed and demonstrated in the different skits they perform to give a better understanding to the people in the community of that social movement.…

An important aspect of Distinctive Visuals is uncovering ideas and meaning through imagination shown in lyrics, words or signs as this is explored in both texts. During the short film the homeless man is alone, shot in two big famous cities, Sydney and New York, the composer questions what is that people love about these cities. This is communicated through extreme close up shots of signs around the cities formed together to send their message. In, “But what is that we love. Do we love the people or the place. Do we measure empathy by donations” questions the realities of society that these two big cities that people love so much, is it the place that makes it just a beautiful place or is it the people because there are unfortunate and under privileged people being disregarded. “Do we measure empathy by donations” also questions society, does contributing to donations truly show that they care. The phrases used put together from signs and posters around the cities in order to send their message makes Genderen’s video unique as it shows how words can tell a story. These simple methods represent how easy it can be to make a change and the great impact it can have on underprivileged people.…

In this case, Milosz expresses how two individuals with different backgrounds can be stopped and affected by the same thing, but this leaves an open window as to how these individuals are affected. Only the individuals themselves are fully capable of understanding and expressing how this one thing has affected them, whether it causes them to reflect on their life or if for that one moment they finally felt at peace. “Our intellectual and active powers increase with our affection”, as stated by Ralph Waldo Emerson. When it comes to art many people will ask “How does this make you feel?” or “Were you moved by the piece?”, etc. And relating back to Milosz he said that art is liberating, a moment in which someone is set free, released from a state in which they felt limited or troubled. So when an individual is impacted emotionally based off an event or when viewing art it provides a stronger intellectual experience. We tend to react more to something that speaks to us rather than something that doesn't spark anything within…

Antonioni’s documentaries all commonly focus on the “behind-the-scenes” of things we use or see every day. He gives us fresh eyes into worlds that we may take for granted. For example, in his film Netteza Urbana, we are shown the lives of Rome’s street cleaners. Antonioni gives us a (stylized) glimpse at the mistreatment of the uncaring residents whose waste is being cleaned up. Not only that, we also get to see the lives of street cleaners when they are doing their job. They’re starving and digging through scraps of…

First I`d like to tell some facts about photo journalism. It is a particular form of journalism that creates images in order to tell a news story. As for me documentary photography is similar to photojournalism. Documentary photography generally relates to longer term projects with a more complex story line, while photojournalism concerns more breaking news stories. There is a final branch of photography directly related to popular social life, and that is documentary photography. Documentary projects generally focus on social reality and human life, informed by the strong feelings of the photographer. They are photographs with a point of view, focusing not just on events, but on the daily texture of life of their subjects. Many reformist projects in the earlier years of the 20th century were documents of disadvantaged social groups in dire straits, poverty, and cultural alienation. But projects toward the end of the century have tended to be more personal to the photographers, sometimes documenting the photographer’s own social group and concerns.…

Lippi's recitation of his life reveals to the reader the true value of art. Art operates as an instrument of God and as prophecy. When Lippi reaches the climax of his speech — the epiphanical moment for the reader — he says that the artist should paint those things that we all pass by from day-to-day but never care to notice. The artist has a duty to open the eyes of his audience. Through art "God uses us to help each other so,/ Lending our minds out" (305-306). Clearly, then, the artist is called by God to sacrifice himself, to devote his energies and all his life to helping other people see. This means, of course, that artists "interpret God" for their audience, and by doing so, they essentially act as prophets, or at least as a kind of mediator between the divine and man (311). Basically, the artist must seek out the meaning of the world and relate it to his audience through the real details of God's creations.…
